Almost all of the Scouts and many of the grannies from Troop 285 turned out
to support the 1997 Crop Walk
held in downtown Albuqerque, NM, on November 2, 1997.
Crop Walk is a multi-denominational fund raiser which aids refugees from
political oppression, wars, natural disasters and other crises throughout the
world.
Scouts from the troop, under the organization of Scouts Frank T. and Derek M., served on one of two shifts of about three hours each. The first shift placed route markers and set up refreshment stands, complete with ice water and fresh orange slices, all around the ten kilometer walking course. The second shift (with the majority of the scouts) manned the stands and each busy street corner, helping all participants in the walk to safely cross the streets and to stay on course, then took down all route markers and refreshment stands, cleaned up trash, and served soup and other refreshments at the finishing line.
The contributions raised at the Albuqueque Crop Walk totalled over $11,000! Great
work, Scouts of Troop 285!
