Troop 285 Grannie Coffee
Submitted by Dwight Coles
Making Grannie coffee is sometimes held to be a very mysterious task, but it's really pretty simple. We use blue-porcelain coffee pots, 3 gallon size, just to be really traditional here in New Mexico. Here's the part that apparently scares off a lot of the would-be early-morning cooks: start with a clean coffee pot. Fill about 3/4 full of cold water and heat until boiling briskly. Turn the heat down very low and wait until the water almost quits boiling, then add three cups of coffee grounds. If the water is
still boiling, the coffee will try to boil up out of the pot. If it does, remove from heat and maybe add a cup of cold water to calm things down. Allow the coffee to simmer for about five minutes. When ready to serve, pour one cup of cold water into the pot to settle the coffee grounds, paying attention to washing down any grounds in the pour spout area. Otherwise, only the folks with moustaches will be able to sift out the
chunks. If the drinkers complain that their spoons dissolve in the cup, you know you've made it just about right.
