El Morro National Monument - September '98 Campout

The 1998 Fall Challenge campout was held at El Morro National Monument near Gallup, New Mexico, on September 25-27.

El Morro, or Inscription Rock, is a cuesta - a long sandstone formation with a gentle slope on top, leading to a steep drop off. It is located a few miles from Ramah, New Mexico, and was a wonderful historic site and great campground for Troop 285. El Morro has been attracting people for hundreds of years. Mr. Mackle filled our ears with various stories of El Morro, from the Anasazi Indians of the 1300's, to the Spanish Conquistadores of the 1600 and 1700's, to the California immigrants of the 1800's. A clear, large pool of water at the base of El Morro has watered wildlife, livestock and man alike.

Here's a photo gallery of some of the highlights of the camp! Click on a photo for the enlarged version.
