| This gas forge was made to be disassembled for demos and also used as a general shop forge. It is moved in the five main sections described below. Each section does not weigh more than about 30 lbs., not including tank.
Approximate costs are $60 for forge, burner and table, the fan cost $20 from Surplus Center, a Fisher gauge costs $50. Insulation cost is included and was shared with other forge builders. The forge reaches welding heat in 10 minutes at 8 lbs. pressure. Welding atmosphere is judged by about 6" of orange flame coming out of door. Normal working pressure is 3 lbs., but a steady low heat may be used as low as 3/4 lbs. A BBQ piezoelectric ignitor is planned to be installed into burner for easy lighting. Also large, locking castors will be added on the back legs. The size of the fire box is 9" diameter x 18" deep. Distance from floor to table is 40" and work support is 46". This is comfortable height for me to look into the forge. 1. Fire Box is made from a scrap yard tank and is about 18 gauge. The front door was cut with a jig saw and it is removable with welded on tabs held with wing nuts on opposite sides. Front and back door openings were also jig sawed. For picking up the forge, tabs were welded on top for a removable handle. A work support was made from square tube and doubles as front handle. Square tube legs welded on botton of fire box hold it in place on table with short square tube sections. Burner flange welded onto top right. Burner assembly is removable, and quickly attaches to fuel line with 1/8" copper tube with compression fitting. Durablanket was inserted and about five layers of 3000 degree mortar applied. Fire bricks were cut in half horizontally and placed on floor to catch flux and scale. 2. Table is made from square tube and legs are flared out for stablility. 3. Burner Assembly is removable from flange and attaches to fan in black box with aluminum flexible hose and hose clamps. 4. Fan Box is made from plywood, has handle on top and doubles as coal forge fan. Foam insulation lessens noise and the box keeps dust out of fan. A PVC "Y" is hose clamped to fan outlet, open on one side (with air gate) and aluminum hose on other side. A switch on front allows easy on/off. 5. 40 lb Tank is easy to move and allows about 15 hours of use at 3 lbs pressure. |
