Hello,
Are you a talk show host, or producer, who is looking for a
controversial guest for your show? If your show tends to lean
toward an "information" format, you've come to the right place
and this page is intended to assist you in: deciding if you'd
like to have me on as a guest, planning the interview, and in
promoting the show in such a way as to best attract its target
audience.
My name is Kathy L. Renbarger, the author of the 1996 book
So you're FED UP with the "criminal justice" system too, huh?
and the founder of Citizens For Effective Justice. My phone
number is (405) 722-3633 and my e-mail address is fedup@flash.net
Originally, I was only doing interviews about my book (So,
you're FED UP with the criminal justice system too, huh?) and
this page was reflective of that emphasis; but, over time, this
focus has shifted toward our assisting people to avoid prison
through voluntary corporal sentences (waiver cases) and our
group's efforts toward the enactment of corporal alternative
sentencing (C.A.S.) laws. Due to this change in focus, I have
split this page into two sections: one for book related and
another for waiver case and C.A.S. related interviews. The
information below is relevant to either type of interview; and,
links to the pages for the book and C.A.S. specific pages are
provided here:

SHOW PROMOTIONAL INFORMATION:
To avoid pronlems, please read the following before deciding
how to promo me and either my book or corporal alternative sentencing:
My book, and C.A.S. programs presents a viable way to reduce crime
and prison overcrowding and, even though corporal sentencing is a part
of the plan, it is only one element in a larger system. Among other
things, I place a stong emphasis on the need for rehabilitation programs,
especially in the areas of substance abuse, literacy, and job skills
training. The use of corporal punishment is the means to an end,
rather than an end in and to itself. It's just the only viable way
to resolve the problem of punishment/ accountability and rehabilitation
being mutually exclusive and to give alternative sentencing the "teeth"
it needs to make rehabilitative programs "intresting" to the criminal
(who otherwise, for the most part, are perfectly content to remaim a
criminal...)
If the show has been promoed incorrectly, the real battle is
already lost before the show ever begins, because the wrong audience
tunes in and the right one has already found an interesting T.V.
show to watch. I can't blame them, either -- I would, too!...
I prefer to target the people who are really concerned about the
problems of crime, prison overcrowding, and the rehabilitation of
criminals to be listening -- as opposed to the sort of person who
would tune in because they think it's a show is about flogging people.
I'm rather dumbfounded by the concept of anyone finding the infliction
of pain on anyone or anything "entertaining." I know those people are
out there; but, they aren't people which I choose to associate myself
with and certainly aren't the "market" which I'm going after. This
seems to confuse some hosts because many of them tend to jump to the
assumption that I must be some kind of s and m weirdo, or something,
to even suggest using corporal punishments on criminals. Anything
but! (Actually, I can't think of much which would be a bigger "turn
off" for me, especially after having seen more of this type of
sentence carried out than I really care to remember...) It's just
that I'm pragmatic enough to place more emphasis on long-term
effects, rather than short-term -- I've known enough crime victims
to be very aware of the pain which victims go through and enough
criminals to know that 1) their lives aren't so great, either, 2) that
many of them could have had much better lives, if there had been a
way of really getting their attention early, and 3) many of the things
which happen to them when they finally find themselves in prison.
Because of these things, I'm able to see that the system I propose
would result in a "net loss" in the misery of people (victims,
potential criminals, and criminals who can be salvaged) and would,
therefore, be worth the temporary pain which (under this system)
would be inflicted.
I prefer promos of the following nature:
1) Are YOU FED UP with crime and prison overcrowding? Do you think
there is no solution? This guest says there IS... (And it would even
SAVE money!) You'll have to tune in to find out what it is...
2) Are you tired of the rehabilitation of criminals and the punishment
of criminals being treated as mutually exclusive concepts? So was
Kathy Renbarger, author of So, you're FED UP with the "criminal
justice" system too, huh? -- So, she's put together a "fix" for it.
Catch the show to find out how she does it...
3) Our state is going crazy trying to find bed space for all of
our prison inmates. Are you ready for a solution? Citizens For
Effective Justice is working toward a solution which would cost
us less and result in less crime.
4) If it was up to YOU to find a way to reduce crime and prison
overcrowding (at the same time...), how would YOU do it? Tune in
_____, to find out how...
5) Would you like to have safer streets, without the expense of
more prisons? Listen _________, to find out how...
etc.
PLEASE!!! REFRAIN FROM:
1) Sound effects... (such as the cracking of whips, screaming sounds,
and the like...)
2) Promoing the show as being about specificly corporal punishment
related (it's FAR more than that.)
(I've actually had both of these happen!. And on a national market
show, at that...)
PARTYING???
If you're going to be driving to a party
read this before you go!
