THE IDEA
Evaluating the wing designs present on the market has made us decide to develop
a completely new glider, granting improvements in both, safety and performance.
THE CREATION AND THE ELLIPTICAL SHAPE
There may be some doubt about the elliptical shape - that is what we can report
whilst the PPC market investigation process -, wrongfully the layout form has
often been connected with instability. Nowadays elliptical wing shapes are
standard technology in wing designs in all aviation developments. Stability can
be achieved by appropriate profile shapes, proper lift distribution, proper
aspect ratio etc. etc. The elliptical shape rather increases stability.
THE TESTING
The wing has been long term tested for safety and general behavior to suit for
the PPC. All kind of relevant maneuvers have been proceeded and flight tests
have shown exceptional flight stability.
For maximum safety, an official load test (in Germany at the German Hang gliding
association) has been proceeded and we could succeed with a dynamic test (shock
test) of 4.400lbs and a static test (load test) of 5.808lbs. The canopy has not
shown any single damage and we even could have gone higher with loads but the
testing equipment was not sufficient enough to reach more loads. With a soft
wing, these have been the highest loads ever achieved at official testing.REMARK ON THE CANOPY'S SIZE:
Due to the advanced airfoil technology, the wing creates much more lift and the
size cannot be compared to the size of the common square canopy. If the regular
square canopy is meant to have 500sqft, then, by using the same method of
measuring, the CHIRON would then have approx. 410sqft, i.e. the CHIRON is
approx. 90sqft.smaller in layout area. The difference between the layout area
and the projected area on the CHIRON is much smaller than the same difference on
the square canopy. That means, the CHIRON creates a relatively bigger projected
area in flight. The performance of the canopy compensates the compared
relatively less wing area. The new CHIRON especially makes the use of the Rotax
503 engine (or similar engines with less power compared to the Rotax 582) now
much more reasonable for a 2 seat PPC.
