Gardens of Manoir d'Eyrignac

Lovely 18th century French and Italian gardens surrounding an elegant 17th manor-house near SARLAT.

The "gabarres" were wooden built barges, used to carry on the Dordogne river coal , wood for barrels and Cahors , Bergerac wines down to Bordeaux.

  Couze-Saint-Front, where the river water is so clear that from the 15th to the 19th century the village became the area's chief paper-maker, producing a fine quality product sold throughout Europe

In Breuil hamlet, close to Sarlat but also anywhere in the fields can be seen this dry stone built huts called "bories".

Fresh local gourmet produces on Saturday's market in Sarlat

The House of La Boetie in Sarlat was built in 1525 and is the birthplace of Etienne de la Boetie. On the street level a big arch was used for shops and the two upper floors show the typical elegance of Renaissance style with large windows framed by carved pilasters.

Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (1533-1592) was one of the most famous thinker of the 16th century. His very close freindship with Etienne de la Boetie (born in Sarlat) contributed to his inspiration in writing compelling appeal for liberty and his famous "Essay" on friendship.
