Arise & Shine Evangelistic Association
An old tavern becomes the
“London Outreach Center”

Arise & Shine Evangelistic Association recently purchased a 100-year-old pub in central London. The three-story building, formerly known as the "Crystal Tavern" and renamed "The London Outreach Center" will be used for ASEA's international ministries. The Center will host regular Bible studies, inner city outreach programs, and provide space for a Christian home-school resource library and ASEA's new "Distance Bible School." The Center will also provide housing for ASEA staff.

The Distance Bible School is a short-term study/work program designed to train teams who visit ASEA in London. In what amounts to a form of modern-day religious irony, students in the program will simultaneously study Britain's wealth of Anglo-Saxon Christian history and evangelize among London's growing multiethnic and increasingly non-Christian population.

London, traditionally a bastion of British culture and orthodox Christianity, is not generally considered a venue for missionary work. But times have changed and ASEA Founders Dirk and Elizabeth Wood are rising to the challenge. In 1992, while the Woods were living in the Philippines (where ASEA maintains another flourishing work), God spoke to Dirk: "You will go to London and preach the Gospel to the nations gathered there." The Woods and their colleagues, Steve and Tina Same, moved to London in June 1993.

ASEA’s vision is in harmony with current demographics. According to Patrick Johnstone in Operation World, London is a spiritual wasteland from which evangelical Christians have fled and then forgotten. Dying congregations, closed churches, and churches converted into Muslim mosques or Hindu temples are commonplace." Of London's nine million inhabitants, over 1.5 million are of foreign origin. Nationally, only ten percent of England's 48 million total population attend church regularly.

Dirk Wood and Steve Same began ministry in London following the example of British church reformers William Booth, George Whitfield, and John Wesley. The team preaches on the streets, in parks, pubs (bars), markets, buses, and commuter trains. And like the Reformers, they are getting mixed results. They have been spit on, mocked, threatened, pushed around, beat up, and even briefly jailed! But some have accepted Christ and the city is taking notice. ASEA has been featured in several newspaper articles, and in January 1996 Dirk Wood was invited to appear on "Barrymore," England's most popular television talk show with host Michael Barrymore. The appearance gave Wood instant notoriety in many parts of Great Britain and Europe.

The London Outreach Center is located just two miles from the famous Tower of London and Tower Bridge. The three story building is perfectly suited for ASEA office and personnel needs. Of the total $113,000 needed to purchase the property, $80,000 has been raised. Additional funds are needed to complete renovations.

ASEA needs volunteer carpenters, plumbers, painters, and other willing hands to help with renovation work. Call Globe Missionary Evangelism for details.
