Dear Friends,

“No, Never, Never? Not Even a Single Word? No.”

What a silly question to ask someone I thought. Surely there are only a very few left upon this earth who have never read a scripture or heard a Bible story!...

There was a large crowd but most of them were turned the other way. I stood on the top step of my step ladder (“stairs,” as the English call them) and preached anyway. It was a bit difficult and I must admit frustrating, to compete with a merry-go-round, haunted mansion and various carnival rides, but six or seven were attentive and listening.

Then at the peak of my message a police van rolled in and took residence. An officer kindly asked me to move a few yards toward the merry-go-round., giving me the liberty to stay if I pleased.

I felt an unusual urge to stop and so I got down and. walked the twenty meters or so to my newly assigned congregation. A tap on my shoulder caused me to stop just short of the spot, and I turned to meet a young lady’s friendly greeting. “I heard what you were saying about Jesus Christ and wondered why you had to stop. Would you explain to me more?” “Have you ever read the Bible?” I responded. Her response...”No, never.” “Never, not even a single word,” I said. “No,” she said.

My “stairs” stood alone for nearly an hour as I read numerous Scriptures and explained their meaning to Jackie. Her eagerness and hunger to understand was exhilarating.

After a quick call, I gave her the news, ‘My wife can’t wait to meet you.” Jackie spent three days with us and what a wonderful time of sharing Christ we had!

Sometimes the Good News is a hated word and is used in a strangled way. We have had this experience many times while in England but never as much as since we have opened the London Outreach Center. It seems that the worst in people is brought out when they have an expectation that is not immediately met.

A young man, Barry, beat and kicked on the door at 10:00 one evening. After talking with him for about 30 minutes he still demanded his cup of tea and right to sleep the night in the house, even threatening to knife me. When I finally decided to get to bed myself, Barry fought me to gain control over entrance in the door. The struggle ended with Barry on the ground and me in the door (Praise God!)

His unreasonable demonic attitude got the best of him again, as I suppose more liquor surged in his blood stream, and he relentlessly became more violent.

Finally two policemen caught him in the act. I felt so sorry for Barry as the police hauled him away for the night. I could only pray that he would realize his true need and hear his Savior calling, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 12:28-30)
