If you are interested something that sounds like an old strat but costs muck less, I custom make / repair pickups. I have spent almost 2 decades researching the way Fenders and Gibsons were manufactured. I built my own coil winder very much like Leo's, and I hand wind my pickups in the same fashion to the same specs. I also so a lot of custom work and vintage retrofits.
