What has helped was wiping w/ "liquid sander/cleaner" (that is what the can says, got it at the Depot) its takes the gloss off the plastic thereby giving a better mechanical bond.

Brian you are correct but keep in mind they were spraying Lacquer on the black pickguards that were made of Forbon board. Forbon is a Vulcanized Fiber Board it is the came material they used for their pickup bobbins. If you have not seen this stuff in the raw it has a surface that will accept paint like a wood body does and that can be buffed out. I really don't think paint will stick well on a plastic pickguard, and it might even slightly melt or deform from the solvents not to mention flack off.
