Do you have access to a drum sander and a drill press? If so, you could probably speed things up by using around 320 wet-dry paper (or P600, which is around 300 grit) around a 1-1/2" to 2" drum and very lightly sand with the drum. You will want to keep the body moving with the direction of the drum and just kiss the wood. Shouldn't take more than 15-20 seconds. The scratch marks will be minimal. Again, this depends on degree of waviness.
I would not attempt this with a hand drill, not enough control.
