: I'm gonna start my first binding project as soon as I finish stripping an old body....

: It seems that the general approach is to apply the binding to an unfinished body, tape it off, spray primer, spray color coats, remove tape, and spray clear. I pursposely left sanding steps out for the sake of length.

: Anyway, I'm gonna do CAR, which means, primer, silver base, & see through red. I'm thinking that may cause quite a bit of buildup above the level of the binding.

: How do I avoid that?

Actually, I think the way to go on that is to apply all coats except clear, then use an indexed razor blade to scrape the binding clean. You may have to use an airbrush or a very narrow spray nozzle (like the one in the sunburst kit?) to build that area up again with clear, and then proceed with the final coats. Some say using tape leads to disaster because of the residue that gets left on the guitar. Either way, it's an extra step (as is CAR), but doing it carefully and taking your time will undoubtedley lead to a cool looking guitar. See the post above? John from Guitar Attack has some stuff on his site about this process. Check it out.
