: I'm gonna start my first binding project as soon as I finish stripping an old body....

: It seems that the general approach is to apply the binding to an unfinished body, tape it off, spray primer, spray color coats, remove tape, and spray clear. I pursposely left sanding steps out for the sake of length.

: Anyway, I'm gonna do CAR, which means, primer, silver base, & see through red. I'm thinking that may cause quite a bit of buildup above the level of the binding.

: How do I avoid that?

I am doing a CAR finish on a double bound Tele Custom style body.

My process is:
* Seal/Grain fill with Fullerplast
* White primer
* Sand smooth repeat until perfect.
* Bind body
* repair any possible damage from binding
* Tape the binding
* Spray the silver
* Spray clear over silver
* Sand clear smooth
* Tape binding
* Spray Red
* Spray Clear

I have never been able to scrape paint from binding with out making a mess so I always tape.
Tips for tape success:
always use painters tape even better get pin striping tape from an auto paint store. Once your last color coat has flashed remove the tape carefully before the paint is fully hard. Prior to clear coat wipe down binding with naphtha. The clear coat steps in between does 2 things one locks in the silver giving the red a clean smooth surface, and two it smooths out the seam over the binding.
good luck
