A
'62 Olympic White P-Bass
Here is an example of a first time refinishing project from Frank Nocco. I'll let Frank give you the details.
This 1962 P had been stripped of its original
sunburst finish and painted a hideous blue color with a brush. On top of
that was a coating of nicotine. (The previous owner was a chain smoker).
The guitar was pitiful
but sounded smooth and sweet. I purchased
the guitar and after debating what to do with it for a year I decided to
attempt a refin (my first, but not last) after I found the Guitar ReRanch
website.
Materials Used;
Ace Hardware Chemical Paint stripper,
McCloskey's Sanding Sealer,
Bin's Primer,
ReRanch Olympic White,
ReRanch Clear Coat,
Mequires Gold Class De-swirl polish-this stuff
is awesome!!!!! and all the grades of sand paper called out in the instructions.
I also used 00 grade steel wool effectively, 1 roll Bounty paper towels,
lots of Arizona Raspberry Ice tea and one understanding and supportive
wife. The on-line instructions are super... the only things I would do
differently are ;
1) One can of color is enough but...use almost
the whole can. Save a little for touch up if needed. You can't put enough
color on!!!!!
2) Two cans of clear coat...use it all! Just
a word on the paint and clear coat. When starting the color coat go very
light and build coats. As you build coats you can go heavier and wetter.
The paint is easy to work with
and runs sand out easily. Put the clear coats
on as heavy as you can. Runs with this stuff are hard to do but if you
do they also sand easily.
Finish off with the Mequires--instant shine!
Great job Frank! You saved a pretty neat old bass.
