This two color start was finished by Joe Steiner using the sunburst aerosol product. Here is the story from Joe;
I started with a beautiful one piece swamp ash body and a maple neck (all from Tommy at USA Custom Guitars).....
1. Applied 2 coats of grain filler
to body.
2. Sprayed 4 coats S&S.
3. Painted sides brown.... I
used 2 cardboard guitar shaped shields to keep the spray contained to the
edges. For the contours I shaped and taped some
aluminum foil for cover and
used some styrofoam wedged in-between the foil and cardboard to help hold
the foil in place. This worked well.
4. I then sprayed the corners
and started the dark band for the front and back. I held the cardboard
shields off the body and positioned them as
needed to get the coverage.
THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP!! For a 2 tone, I found that you need to spray
your corners and dark band BEFORE the amber..Why?..you'll see......
5. After these dark coats were
dry... I lightly sanded (400 grit dry) the dark band and blended any hard
lines and made the band one consistent width (at
least tried to).
Note: You need to spray A LOT
of brown to get it dark enough.. I recommend buying two cans of Brown.
I ran out of paint and there are some areas that
could use more brown. [ Note,
The formula has been increased. One can should be enough. BL]
6. Sprayed amber/butterscotch.
I just sprayed until it looked like old strats in photos I have from internet.
7. No clear coat...if you need
to fix your transition zone, it's gonna mess up the amber..so you have
to nail the transition..this is why I recommend
completely spraying all your
edges, corners and outer dark bands before you spray the amber....you just
want to be left with the transition zone.
8. Spray transition zone (I
used the green tip nozzle only). This was the HARDEST part...no matter
what I tried, the spray would create too much mist
and expanded my transition zone
beyond where I desired it to be. But I was very careful and I am happy
with the results....
9. Clear coats on body and neck
(no amber) .
10. Final polishing
By the way the guitar looks
and sounds amazing!!!
