Here is another cherry burst from Rick Wilkins using the ReRanch wood dyes. Here is a quick note from Rick on the process.....
I stripped all the finish off then sanded dry with 150, then 220. I got wet it with water to raise the grain then sanded it again and repeated that process. I sanded more with 320 then wiped with a paper towel wetted with a very diluted water based aniline dye-yellow with a touch of red. The burst was shot with a Paasché double action airbrush kit. It is standard size airbrush that, in the kit, uses cans for propellant. I mixed red with a bit of yellow and brown for a sienna-faded-reddish color and shot a very light burst. I cut stencils to match the switch plate and pickguard shapes and shot a bit more color there to simulate the fading that occurs after time. Once the color was on I sealed it with a couple of coats of the tinted clearcoat to the shade I wanted then finished coating with plain clear and buffed to a medium gloss. Thanks Rick. That is a very convincing aged burst.
