| Chuck Lohn started climbing at the tender age of 14 in the Davis mountains of Texas in 1974. His original trips involved nothing more than rappelling, but he soon developed an interest in lead climbing and he ventured into aid and free climbing in January of 1975. By the time he was 19, he had completed over 100 first ascents on rock routes throughout west Texas, and he had multiple alpine summits under his belt including ascents of Mt. Rainier and Mt. McKinley. At the time, he was one of the youngest people to have climbed the West Buttress of McKinley. Today, Chuck holds two engineering degrees in petroleum and electrical engineering, and he divides his time between deepwater drilling engineering work and climbing guiding. He typically spends over 100 nights out of the year in a tent. Chuck has leveraged his love of travel and climbing to bag peaks and rock routes in the Swiss and French Alps, Western Spain, Ecuador, Canada, Alaska and the Himalayas. He has climbed at hundreds of rock climbing destinations throughout north America, and his big wall experience includes multiple ascents of El Capitan in Yosemite and multiple routes in the bugaboos of Canada. He also lead the American expedition to the north face of Thalay Sagar in the Himalayas in 1994 (a 5000' big wall with a 23,000' summit elevation). Chucks alpine experience includes successful ascents of Mts. Chimborazo and Cotopaxi in Ecuador, multiple ascents on all of the significant peaks in the Canadian Rockies and the Pacific Northwest, and a solo ascent of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. His favorite climbing medium is vertical ice, and he has climbed hundreds of vertical ice routes throughout Colorado and the Canadian Rockies. Chuck is currently on an engineering assignment in Chennai, India and is not expected to return until May of 2001. If you want to contact him, write to hangdog@flash.net |

I am in the process of adding the latest information on accidents that have occured on the refuge here. Names of victems and participants will be omitted to protect the pivacy of the individuals involved. I hope that people can learn from the experiences of others from these reports.
Rockfall Injury - Narrows: A man was seriously injured after sustaining a head injury from rockfall in the Narrows. The injured party was watching climbers on middle Zoo Wall when a climber pulled a rock off of the route known as Knuckle Sandwich. The climbers were top-roping the route, and yelled "rock" but the injured party accidentely jumped into the path of the falling stone when he heard the signal. He suffered a very serious head injury, and is still hospitallized as of 2/1/2000. This incident occured on January 23, 2000. Lesson Learned: This is a very serious injury and it is not known at this time if this man will survive this incident. Keep him in your prayers. For now, we should all rethink our use of helmets. I am one of the worst people when it comes to using helmets. I will normally wear one on big walls, and especially in places like the Sandias where rockfall is common. But we need to remember that incidents like this can also occur in places like the Wichitas. We need to all think about it. For now, I'll be keeping mine on.
Let us know when you hear of any new accidnets. We will post them here so that we can all learn from these incidents.
Here is the latest route information as of 2/1/2000. Some of this information is omitted from the guide so please take notes.
If you have any additional route information, then please email us at the address listed below and we will post the information on this web page. Thanks!
