Horror Refrences in SCREAM
Casey - Billy and Sid - At the Fountain
Sid's First Call - Sid, Tatum, Gail - Bathroom
Video Store - After Dark - The Party
The End - Other

Casey

>Casey has to answer questions to HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13TH, and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

>When Casey answered her question by the killer, she says it exactly like the character of Rachel says it in HALLOWEEN 4, "It's Michael...Michael Myers!" The same tone and everything.

>Casey tries to let out a scream to her parents but can't scream until they get into the house. This is just like the  scene at the end of HALLOWEEN 2 where Laurie Strode tries to scream but can't until Loomis, Marion Chambers, and the cop are inside the hospital.

>The whole beginning of the movie is like WHEN A STRANGER CALLS.

>Casey died early which is like paying homage to the way Janet Leigh's character died early in PSYCHO even though she was a big star.

>Wes Craven takes a jab at the people who did the other ELM STREETS when Casey says about the other Elm Streets , "The first one was good, but the rest sucked."

>Drew Barrymore was hanging from the tree and it looks exactly like the opening scene of SUSPIRIA.

>When Casey's parents come home to see that something is wrong, her father says to the mother, "Drive down
to the Mackenzie's house.." which is the same quote that Laurie Strode says to Tommy Doyle and Lindsey
Wallace in the original HALLOWEEN when Michael Myers tried to kill them.

>When Casey is being held down by the killer, she pulls away at the mask. This sequence is EXACTLY like the
original ELM STREET where Tina pulls at the face of Freddy and pulls off his face. Instead Casey pulls off the mask but we don't see the face cause it would ruin the movie.

>Casey is seen popping popcorn in the kitchen at the beginning of SCREAM. Kevin Williamson has said this is
supposed to be somewhat like Annie popping popcorn in HALLOWEEN.

>The quote "...guy who had knives for fingers,"  is a direct quote from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

Billy and Sidney

>Billy Loomis mentions that he was watching THE EXORCIST on TV right before sneaking to Sidney's house.

>"Don't Fear the Reaper" was played in the background when Billy snuck into Sidney's room. The original
version of this song is a cult favorite of Halloween fans since it played in the original HALLOWEEN.

>Billy (who resembles Johnny Depp from ELM STREET) sneaks into Sidney's room only to have to ditch out of sight really quick when a parent comes by is just like the scene in the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET where Johnny Depp's character sneaks into Nancy's room only to have to leave when her mother comes in. Just like one another!

At the Fountain

>Randy imitates Jerry Lewis when saying, "Did you really put her liver in the mailbox? I heard they put her liver in the mailbox, right next to her spleen and her pancreas." Or something to that effect.

>They mention the use of an ice pick in BASIC INSTINCT and mention Sharon Stone's name numerous times.

Sid's First Call

>Just like the original ELM STREET, the boyfriend is accused of doing the murders because he was the only one there. Just like Rod Lane in the original ELM STREET being accused of the murders because he was the only one there. Craven does both movies!

>When Sidney goes back into her house after talking with the killer, the killer comes out of the closet the same
way Michael Myers comes out of the closet after Bob in the original HALLOWEEN.

>Sidney lives on 34 Elm Street. The scene where this is shown was cut out of the movie. But, in the original
script, and some people say the trailer (I'm not positive), you can see this address. Kevin Williamson mentions this address in the SCREAM commentary. As you know, Elm Street is from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, another Craven film.

Sidney, Tatum, and Gail

>Tatum wears a jersey/shirt thing with the number "10" on it. For those of you who remember, Johnny Depp
wore a football jersey with the number "10" on it in the original ELM STREET. Both are Wes Craven movies.

>Linda Blair has a cameo in the movie. She's a reporter. Originally starred in THE EXORCIST.

Bathroom

>Stu mentions "Candyman" in the locker scene. Another reference to a movie, this time being, CANDYMAN.

>The colors on Steve's jacket and the bitchy cheerleader in the bathroom, blue and yellow, are the colors of a car full of teenagers in the movie HALLOWEEN 5.

>When the Voice in the bathroom calls to Sidney, it's almost like when Freddy is calling to Nancy in A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

Video Store

>While in the video store, a girl walks up and asks for the movie that stars ET's mom. Randy answers with THE
HOWLING.

>FRANKENTSTEIN is seen being played in the video store.

After Dark

>Sidney says, "My god, this place looks like THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN" when talking to Tatum and Dewey. Obviously that's in reference to the movie which is named the same thing.

>The Janitor at Woodsboro High is named Fred and is wearing a Green and Red dirty sweater with a dirty old
hat. It's played by Wes Craven himself!

The Party

>The house used in the movie stands atop a hill and is quite large. This is supposed to be like the house in
PSYCHO the way it's at the top of the hill by itself.

>Randy calls Billy Loomis "Leatherface" in reference to TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.

> Randy rented EVIL DEAD, HELLRAISER, TERROR TRAIN, PROM NIGHT, and THE FOG for the big party at Stu's house.

>Billy Loomis mentions SILENCE OF THE LAMBS when discussing Sidney's remembering her mother.

>Sidney says she hopes to not end up like her movie, "you know, kinda like THE BAD SEED or something."  This is in reference to the movie, THE BAD SEED.

>Tatum mentions, "What is this, I SPIT ON YOUR GARAGE?" which is obviously her reference to the movie I
SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE.

>They use the classic "Cat Scare" that Carpenter usually laughs at, but Craven uses it here. It's used in all
horror movies. Everyn horror movie has a cat scare where a cat comes from nowhere to make a noise. The
soon-to-be-victim thinks the cat made the noise but it's really the killer.

>Craven uses the Halloween theme from the television as the actual background theme being played through
much of the ending of the movie.

The End

>Billy Loomis quoted PSYCHO when saying "We all go a little mad sometimes,"--Anthony Perkins, Psycho.

>Billy mentions that corn syrup is used as pig's blood in the movie CARRIE.

>Sidney hides in the closet from Billy as he's trying to kill her. In HALLOWEEN, Laurie Strode hides in the closet to hide from Michael Myers. In SCREAM, however, Sid attacks the killer which makes the two different in one aspect. Of course, Laurie Strode DOES stab Myers with the knife while inside the closet, so they still share some similarities.

>The scene where Sidney is in the deputy's police truck getting attacked by the killer in the backseat is just like
the scene in HALLOWEEN where Michael Myers is in the backseat (just like the killer here) trying to stab Annie (Sidney in this case) who is in the front.

>The scene where Sidney was at the window of the attic was taken direclty from a classic suspense thriller called THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE, made in the 1940's. It's about a mute woman trapped in a creepy old house with a murderer on the loose.

>They mention that it's sometimes better NOT to know why somebody kills. They say sometimes a motive isn't
necessary and ruins the movie. This could be a "knock" on HALLOWEEN 6 and FREDDY'S DEAD:THE FINAL NIGHTMARE in which both explain WHY the killer kills people. Both have been criticized for giving them a motive.

>There are Picture Credits at the end of the movie. This was last done, to my knowledge, at the end of PET
SEMATARY II. But, Wes Craven used picture credits at the end of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.

Other

>The whodunit plot is somewhat like that of PROM NIGHT.

>Billy Loomis' name is probably from PSYCHO or HALLOWEEN since both movies had names with LOOMIS in it.
