CORVETTE GAZETTE – NOVEMBER 2009
Central Oklahoma Corvette Club
FROM THE PRESIDENT
There are several different things to inform you about in this month’s newsletter. Summer is definitely over as attested by our much cooler weather but don’t pull those car covers up so quickly. I’m hoping some of us will be able to drive them to our Cajun Boil Halloween Party on Saturday evening. We still have our Halloween Party and Christmas Parties to attend. I want to thank Marsha Stephenson for all her hard work in planning and executing that plan for lodging and feeding our group in Eureka Springs this month. Butch Abbott has had his 1962 Corvette convertible out in Clinton, OK in the Route 66 Museum for the past year and is about to have it replaced by a 1957 Chevrolet 2 door hardtop owned by Rick Erwin. If you get out that way be sure to stop in and see it. This is a new car for Rick that he traded his beautiful 1966 Corvette for this month. This newsletter may get posted after our Cajun Boil but I can already smell the fresh baked pumpkin pies, baked beans, and other wonderful plates of food brought by our members. Also the sweet corn, boiled potatoes, shrimp and crab legs being cooked by Don Birdwell and his crew. Thank you Don. So if that happens I’ll tell you more about the party later. I want to again thank Marilyn Moore and Judi Hohne for their cooking talents and bringing in our goodies to the club meeting. I know everyone appreciates them because they are always gone at the end of each meeting, the goodies not Marilyn and Judi. We nominated our officers and board member positions this month as required and will have those elections next month according to our by-laws. We are still growing each month in membership, please make the new members feel welcome and a part of our COCC family. Introduce yourself to a new person each month and soon you will know everyone. Please come to the meetings and activities and be a part of your Central Oklahoma Corvette Club. If you don’t receive email from me each week or at least every other week please send me a message telling me so I can correct your address.
Thank you all very much,
Lynn Chapman
PAST EVENTS/OLD BUSINESS:
1. Oct 2 -4, 2009 is the Eureka Springs: Eureka Springs Corvette show has come and gone. Thank you to Marsha Stephenson for her hard work in reserving 40 rooms for our group and putting together a catering company to feed those who were able to attend. As you know the club picked up part of the food bill to give back to our members.
2. North Texas
Corvette Club Show: Congratulations
to Ron and Dede Page for winning one of the 10
Builder's choice awards at the Lone Star Goodguys Show at Ft. Worth on October
3rd, in Wichita Falls TX, there were over 3,500 cars there and 175 in
the Pro-Picks area competing for awards.
BUSINESS and UPCOMING EVENTS:
1. Cajun Boil and Halloween Party October 24th : It was again held at Jack Hohne’s Barn (garage) on Saturday evening. Don Birdwell was our head chef and Walt Henkujens assisted boiling crab legs, shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob and boiled potatoes. Everyone brought a wonderful side dish and their own favorite beverages. We served 80 members and their families this time. We well post some of the pictures on the web site very soon. We want to thank Jack and Judi Hohne for the use of their garage (barn) and Jeff Hohne for picking up and setting up the tables and chairs then returning them on Sunday. A big thank you to Don Birdwell and Walt Henkuzens for cooking another great Cajun Boil meal and working so hard. Thanks also to Jeff Hohne for the burger and wiener burn. I know everyone really enjoyed themselves again this year because when they left they were walking very slowly, so no one went away hungry. We all look forward to next year’s event already. As you know the club paid for the meat and potatoes as part of giving back to our members.
2. Annual Big Deal Secret Location Trip: This trip has been cancelled for this year. We are working on next year’s event as I write this letter. We do have several locations in mind already to look over.
3. Honorary Membership: The board voted to grant Rev. James and Mardi Lusby Honorary membership in our club. They were voted in that status, by the board, because of their past outstanding service to the club. The Lusby’s now live in Rogers, AR. where he ministers to a new congregation. The board was able to do this in accordance with our by-laws.
4. Election Committee: Committee chairperson JoAnn Young announced the slate of nominees for officer and board member positions for our 2010 COCC Executive Board. This is required to be done at our October meeting by our by-laws. I opened up the floor to additional nominations and did not receive any. The nominees for our next election are as follows: President Lynn Chapman, Vice-President Jim Spearman, Treasurer Jack Hohne and Secretary Linda Blundell. Board members so far nominated are Tony Scott, Fred Benenati and Karen Griffin. The election will take place at the November regular scheduled meeting. Thank you to the other members of the committee Judy Spearman, Connie Birdwell, Sharon Williams and Linda Blundell for volunteering to help.
5. Christmas Party Dec.6th: Our annual Christmas party is scheduled for Sunday evening, Dec. 6th at the same location as last year. I will send additional email with an rsvp form to print for your response and where to send your money. So make up your mind on this one, not later than Nov. 28th as we can’t take last minute reservations because of pre-planning with the hotel for food and tables. The meal will cost $25 per person and reservations are required. We will again have the gift exchange of a nice gift between $10 and $15 so that the event does not get expensive. You do not have to take part in the exchange, this is voluntary, but you will have fun anyway just watching.
6. November 17th, 2009 Meeting: Our next meeting will be November 17th at the Clarence Page Building, Wiley Post Airport with a Board meeting at 7:00 PM and the club meeting at 7:30 PM. Eating before our next meeting will be at Meiki’s Restaurant, at the corner of NW Expressway and Rockwell on the southeast corner in OKC. Everyone is welcome to join in eating with us, new members and visitors. If you’ll be there about 5:15 to 5:30 PM that should give you enough time to eat and still be at the meeting for socializing before the meeting.
