The 9th
Artists’ Residency’s participants opened an
exhibition at the Art-East Gallery few days ago.
The organizer for the residency is the Hungarian
Multicultural Center, and the exhibition is
curated by Beata Szechy. At the exhibition
21 talented artists are introducing they work,
said in the opening speech dr. Boka Istvan, mayor
and congressman. There are paintings, graphics,
sculptures, and installations in the gallery. The
mayor emphasized on the importance of the Hungarian
- American cultural exchange and relationship.
also, he said about the residency is annually
organized from 1997 in Balatonfured. The
originally Paloczi Horvath Adams’ castle gives
home for the residency for the artists. The
artworks mostly influenced by the nature,
landscape of Balatonfured or surrounding area, but
every artist style is different. At the
opening the Ferencsik Janos Music school Clarinet
Quartet played 20th Century classical music and
one poet said in english and Hungarian her poetry.

Art-East Gallery. Two group came to Hungary
in June and July to the residency, painters,
graphic artists and sculptors, they are influenced
by the Lake Balaton, the exhibited works mostly
donated to the city of Balatonfured. 6. MTI
-- Electronic media Evaluation of the
residency: Clayton Bright We were fortunate to
have two people who spoke Hungarian, because we
could go around easier with them. Laara Cassells
Balatonfured is a friendly town with lot s of
resources for sculptors. I was able to find
tools, materials, paint and adhesives with base.
We were a diverse group of artists of different
ages, nationalities and artistic styles. We
soon became good friends and it was a rare
privilege to be invited into 9 other “studios”
to share a wide range of artistic approaches.
I
thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the
opportunity to visit some Hungarian tons and
savior the culture a little bit. I
appreciated having 2 Hungarian artists among us
who were very helpful with any linguistic problems
we encountered. I also appreciated Beata
Szechy’s help and all her efforts to arrange the
exhibitions. The catalogues and to make us feel so
at home. Edward and Diane Lane Overall, this
experience has been fabulous. Our new
understanding of Hungary, the hospitality of the
people of Balatonfured, Beata’s very special
care of each of us, Rita’s help and good humor
couldn’t be better. The residency has far
surpassed our expectations. We have been
fortunate to have such a compatible group of
artists... all of whom we will certainly keep in
touch with over the coming years. The
diversity of artists not only in location, but in
media is wonderful. We loved the tour day
and the wonderful end of the day at Beata’s
home. Thank you for making this possible for
us. Manfred Rapp The zeneiskola is a very
inspiring place for artist to work. The
facilities are clean and the staff is very
accommodating. Light and studio space is
very good. The fact that it is close to
shops and supply stores is a great plus.
Also to walks to the lake Balaton is very nice,
not to mention that the restaurants are in easy
walking distance. In short, a great place to work
in. Renee Rhor At Balatonfured, I appreciated
first of all the huge terrace where we worked
every day facing the beauty of ultra old horse
chestnuts. We were a team of painters and
sculptors of all ages and countries and diversity
was fascinating. I had time enough as well
as having numerous exchanges regarding our
respective works and ideas about art. This
exchange gave me a lot of ideas and new
experiences. A special note is for the
barbecue given by Beata at her marvelous fairy
tale cottage. Bela Torkos The HMC sponsored artist
program has enriched my personal and artistic life
beyond my wildest imagination. The program
is well organized, Beata Szechy --
president of the HMC, and staff has provided a
friendly and warm environment for the exploration
of the imaginable realm of art. My many
thanks to all. John Murdoch I found everything to
be satisfactory. You and Rita were both on
hand to take care of things and even out any
wrinkles. Any thing that was off or strange I just
kind of consider as part of the adventure of the
trip. The accommodations were sparse but
adequate and the food was okay to really good. I
actually like the fact that it's sort of bare
bones without too many frills because it would
distract from working. I sort of felt like
we were on an art island. We were separate
from the population except for meals, when it
counts most. The connection the group had through
Bela, Emese, and Rita was crucial. It gave us a
glimpse into Hungary and Hungarians that we
wouldn't have had otherwise. I do wish that
it was a little longer and I'm going to actively
search for residencies that allow more time. The
group was fantastic. Professional,
passionate, interesting, mature. It was
great for me to see this because I don't know many
older artists who are making it. I was kind of
bummed out at first because there weren't more
younger people but it turned out to be a very good
thing in the end. I didn't really make any very
close friends but I enjoyed everyone's company
nonetheless. If there were younger people
and more drinking and partying going on I would've
avoided it anyway as this is exactly what I'm
trying to get away from. I feel fortunate
and honored to have participated. This trip
will undoubtedly cast a long shadow over anything
I do in the near and distant future. I'm
sorry we didn't get to talk more and wish i
would've went to your place in Budapest at the
beginning of the month. I assumed I'd be
seeing you all the time. I can be kind of
squirrely when I meet people for the first time
and sometimes it takes me a while to get used to
people and feel comfortable. Having said all
that I think it's a wonderful thing that you do
and I hope it continues to be successful for you.
I've always wanted to go to Hungary. It and
Czech republic have been a source of curiosity for
years. It's sort of like a dream come true
for this whole thing to have worked out so well.
I compared my work I did before I left with the
work I did in Hungary and it's like two different
artists. The work I did in Hungary is so
lively. I feel like I could ramble all day.
I hope this letter finds you well and that the 2nd
residency is as good as the first. Thank you
so much. Candice Smith Corby I loved it!
I loved how open and free it was with little
structure. I came wanting solitary work time
without judgment and am grateful that the
atmosphere permitted that. The provided meals were
a luxury and the restaurants great and people very
nice. I enjoyed the mix of people and art styles.
I loved having a writer between us. Everything was
so great, I feel lucky. Thanks for all your
hard work, Candice Cynthia Kukla The Hungarian
Multicultural Council provided an unusual program
whereby artists could make art work on site in
Balatonfured from which the director selected one
or more works that are permanently donated to the
HMC and exhibited at a professional gallery in
Balatonfured during the second residency section.
There was much flurry of activity to prepare for
the exhibit and the mayor spoke eloquently at
the opening reception.
