Hungarian Ambassador Visits Fort Worth

Fort Worth Sister Cities International and its supporters sponsored a reception for His Excellency András Simonyi, Hungarian Ambassador to the United States on Monday, June 27 at the Fort Worth Club on West 7th Street. During his one day visit, Ambassador Simonyi, an avid promoter of American Hungarian trade and commerce met with Paul Harrell and the Fort Worth Star Telegram Editorial Board; Ann Kothman, Director of RadioShack International; Executives at American Airlines - Don Casey and Bennie Bracken and Mayor Mike Moncrief. The Ambassador also had a tour of the Kimbell Art Museum with Curator of Non-Western and Asian Art - Jennifer Casler Price.

At the reception in the evening, Budapest Committee Chair Karen Kroh greeted the Ambassador and guests and presented the Ambassador with a rondell by local artist David Gappa.

Dr. András Simonyi spoke of the mutual need to translate the friendship between Fort Worth and Budapest into economic, cultural and social benefits for the citizens in both cities.

The evening was an opportunity for DFW Hungarians to meet with the Ambassador. On behalf of the Metroplex Magyar Cultural Cirlce, Imre Gazda presented the Ambassador with a gift bag, which the Ambassador thanked with sincere friendship and posed for an impromptu photo with Imre Gazda and Péter Váli.

The highlight of the evening was when the Ambassador played a few numbers with City Manager Charles Boswell's band "The Mootown Rockers". The Ambassador was presented with a Fender Stratocaster guitar by the band and Mayor Moncrief, which Dr. Simonyi "broke in" at the spot with an unforgettable performance. The band, featuring with the Ambassador on a lead guitar, played the songs "Hoochie-Coochie Man," "Killing Floor," and "Wild Thing," the latter sung both in Hungarian and English.

Thank you Mr. Ambassador, thank you Fort Worth Sister Cities International for an evening to remember.

MEED Multi-Cultural Festival
Multi-Cultural Festival

The Metroplex Magyar Cultural Circle staffed a food booth on Saturday, April 9th at the Peak Academy in Dallas. There were Hungarian palacsintas, virsli, rice, and rétes for sale.

The festival featured music, dances and art from various diverse cultures. Miss Chinatown USA was there too, but in the and it was all about food, love, famiy and fellowship.

The Peak Academy is located at 4605 Live Oak St, Dallas (Directions). The festival was sponsored by the Multi-Ethnic Educational and Economic Development Center.

Mr. Aronoff with former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk
Coffee with the Hungarian Consul

On Thursday, March 31st the Dallas Chamber of Commerce sponsored "Business Opportunities in Hungary” ,featuring the Honorable Phillip Aronoff,Honorary Consul for Hungary . The event was hosted by Ron Kirk, former Mayor of Dallas at the Hilton Lincoln Center in Dallas. Although not Hungarian himself, Mr. Aronoff, a prominent Houston businessman, was chosen by the Hungarian Ambassador to the United States to fill the post.

Mr. Aronoff presented an interesting slideshow and talk about the benefits of conducting business in Hungary. A member of the European Union , Hungary has a high educational level combined with a relatively low tax rate and income level. 2005 TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute

The Metroplex Magyar [Hungarian] Cultural Circle is requesting help in sponsoring, a talented Hungarian pianist, Laszlo Borbely, to participate in the TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute in Fort Worth. Dr. Tamás Ungár is the Executive Director of the Institute . Any contribution ($10,$20,$50 or any other amount) to help sponsor Laszlo's participation would be greatly appreciated. A tax deductible receipt will be provided. Laszlo is more than willing to give a recital for the MMCC during his stay here.

Hungarian Minister and Ambassador attend famed actor's 80th birthday

JUNE 28, 2005 - Hungarian Minister of Economy, János Kóka, and Ambassador Simonyi traveled to Las Vegas to attend a birthday celebration in honor of actor Tony Curtis' 80th birthday at the MGM Grand Hotel.

On behalf of the Hungarian Government, the Minister and the Ambassador presented Mr. Curtis with a custom- made Herend porcelain vase featuring Mr. Curtis' portrait. According to Ambassador Simonyi, Tony Curtis was visibly moved by the gesture.

Hungarian International Mission

In 1994 a group of local metroplex citizens organized the Hungarian International Mission Board to share in the task of getting Bibles to Hungarian chaplains and troops, as well as to lay ministries and the people. Native Hungarian Dr. Frank Farkas has made numerous trips to Hungary and in 1995 helped establish the first conference between the Gideons and the military chaplains.
