Lubrication System Priming Pump
This $10 pump sprayer from Home Depot, with a barber nipple inserted in the hose of the sprayer, made for a great lubrication system priming pump. It worked like a charm, allowing the entire lubrication system to be primed so that when the engine started, it was fully pre-lubed and immediately built oil pressure.

Three (3) quarts of oil were added to the pump and, after connected to the engine, pressure was added by pumping it a few times. Then, the engine was turned over . After repeating the pumping and cranking routine a few times, large quantities of oil could be seen flowing through the heads (as viewed through the oil filler hole).

I have to thank SC96COBRA of Corral.net for the heads-up on this priming method. Thanks Dan, it worked wonderfully!

Priming without the pump was initially attempted by cranking the engine without spark plugs or fuel. After several periods of cranking the engine, no trace of oil was found at the pressure sending port below the oil filter. As the oil pump rotates 1:1 with the crank, it's assumed that there just isn't sufficient rotation of the crank via the starter (i.e., 1 rotation of the crank for about every 20 rotations of the starter) to pump large volumes of oil without some type of external pumping assistance.
The barbed nipple adapter screwed into a right angle adapter in the oil filter housing. The right angle adapter is used for mechanical oil pressure gauge.
