Aspire EP Motor Mounting

The photo above shows how I modified the forward fuselage to accommodate the new motor. The above photo was for the 480 motor. To accommodate the 600 motor I needed to remove additional material from F2 and F3. It is a tight fit, but it works! I used the following procedure:

  1. Remove existing power system and throw it in the garbage. You will have to cut the micro switch off the side of the fuse since it is glued on. This is not a problem.
  2. Use a dremel tool to sand former F2, the old firewall, to a "U' shaped fuse former.
  3. Make a one inch diameter 1/8" light plywood part to plug former F1. You can locate and drill the motor mounting holes and the hole for the output shaft as well. Test fit this part to your motor. The Graupner 600 uses 3 mm screws. When satisfied, glue the disk into former F1. This is now your new firewall!
  4. Mount the motor to the new firewall. Shape another "U" shaped former out of 1/4" plywood to form a rear motor rest/mount. Holding this new part in contact with the mounted motor, glue it in place in front of F3.
  5. That is the major portion of the retrofit. Not too difficult, huh?

This shot show the motor squeezed into the nose. It is mounted to F1 and rest in the rear on F3. F2 has been ground down to about nothing. Note added .047 uF capacitor across motor terminals for noise suppression.
