JC's Planes and Projects
Sig Kadet LT-40
This was my first R/C airplane and I built it up from the kit. The kit is excellent with many laser cut parts, and excellent instructions for the beginner. It spoiled me for the rest of my projects. My only prior experience building airplanes was 20 years ago when I flew free flight and control line airplanes. The learning curve was very steep as I acquired new skills such as working with CA glues, Monokote-ing, and radio installation. While a little overwhelming at first, I was really glad that I chose to build instead of buy an ARF. For me, building airplanes has become fully half of the hobby. I enjoy building as much as I enjoy flying. I have now built and flown five airplanes since the Kadet, but I still vividly remember that first flight. It was a real thrill to see something that I had created from a "box of sticks" take to the air, fly around under full control, and then safely land.
I now do some instructing at our field and in my opinion the Kadet is the finest trainer that have flown. It is big, easy to see, and very stable. The OS 40 LA engine supplies ample power for training.
The plane originally had a Futaba radio and servos but these were removed and are being used in my GP CAP 232. I have not flown the plane all 2000 season and have sold it to a young guy at our field. It is in perfect condition, but I have moved on to more advanced designs. The Kadet is currently busy teaching yet another student to fly - this will be a total of three!
Builder Notes: Just follow the instructions and you will have a great flying airplane. Nose weight may be required with the lighter .40 engines like the OS LA. With a ball-bearing .46 the CG will be right on the money.
Wingspan: 70 inches
Weight: 6.25 pounds
Engine: OS 40 LA w/10x6 APC prop
Features: Wing built for enhanced visibility for training. It has a red bottom with white stripes and a jet white top with black-trimmed red starburst.
Performance: Excellent trainer. Is the 40 LA enough for training? You betcha. I learned on it, my brother learned on it, and my 40 LA is very user friendly. The 40 LA will let the Kadet loop from level flight, do hammer heads, and other basic aerobatics.
First Flight: Spring 1999
Plane has been sold and is busy teaching its third student to fly!
