4 years later, in 1885, there is a deed between Peter W. Melton and his wife LOUISIANA W. WINGFIELD, and there is no intervening marriage in the marriage register. Louisiana is identified as the daughter of Maria/Marish L. Wingfield. Peter and Louisiana and her siblings (Martha W. and John Walker Wingfield) are partitioning their grandfather John S. Wingfield's estate. They jointly get 135 acres, which they promptly turn around and sell. Louisiana is called Louisiana A. Melton in later documents of this case, so I am not sure if her middle initial was W. or A. or both. Sh signed it as L. A. Melton in several places. This land, it turns out, actually belonged to Mariah's husbnad John W. Wingfield's father John S. Wingfield. So...is Louisiana a different person from Wlla? Is Ella a phonetic corruption of "L. A."? Is mariah L. the same wife of John W. as Lavina? I think so. I found the 1857 marriage of John W. Wingfield to Mariah L. Wingfield (They were cousins of some sort) I thceked backward in the census to see if I could solve the mystery of Ella?Louisiana's correct name, and it just got worse. 1860: John W. and Maria Wingfield have daughter Olive, age l. 1870: Mariah, now a widow, has daughter Ollie (presumably a nickname for Olive), age 13 pluadaughter Mattie W. age 11 and son John W. age 8. 1880: Mariah, listed as M. L., lives with her parents Thomas and Susan Wingfield, and her daughter is now listed as Louisiana, age 20; also, daughter Martha/Mattie is there. Maybe the film of birth records will clear some of this up. My theory is that Olive didn't like her name and changed it to Louisiana, age 20; also, daughter Martha/Mattie is there. Anyway, in 1886, Peter W's brother John H. (by the way, the H is for Henry;don't know if you knew that) married Ella/Louisiana's sister, Martha W. "Mattie" Wingfield. Here is their marriage record: Page 121 April 20, 1886 John Henry Melton and Mattie W. Wingfield. Groom age 27, single b. and lives Alb., parents P. W. and Martha A., occ: railroader, married by H. M. Hope, age 25, single, b. and lives Alb., parents John W. and Mary A. You may recall that the 3rd sibling, John Walker Wingfield, in 1900 was living with Peter and John's sister Laura Melton, so apparently these two families got along well. I ordered the births film for Albemarle, Va.; we'll see what that turns up. I's curious to see if these lines dead-end or what. Taken from an e-mail from Holly Cochran to Joan Melton Bartay on May 15, 2002. She was married to John W Winfield about 1856 in Va.. Children were: Ella A. Wiinfield.
