Melton History and Crest

The Melton's

The early Melton family were thought to be originally of Viking origin.  They landed in the Northern part of the British Isles, in around 870 A. D., under King Strigud the Stout.  Duke William, who invaded and defeated England in 1066, Was descended from the first Duke Rollo of Normandy.

The majority of information on the Melton's comes from a two volume book by Michael Leisure called "Coming to America, The Melton/Milton's"

Joan has documented proof on nine generations back from her with census, wills, deeds, court records, birth and death certificates.

Joan De Melton was the daughter of John De Melton.  She was born around 1306 in Hornby Castle, England.  She married Robert Conyers and died in 1380.

Robert Conyers was Lord of Hornby Castle, their child John succeeded him in that roll.

This information is documented on pedigree information submitted by William Floyd Bonner to United Ancestries Linked Pedigrees and placed on Automated Archives cd # 100.

As I was born Joan Melton, I am very interested in this.  Also, my father told me that our family came from this part of England.

This information is also in "Magna Charta Sureties" by Adams Weis: Bethamis Baronetage: VI

Can anyone get a copy to this book?  My half sister just came back from England.  She took a picture of the sign that says "Borough of Melton" just as you go into the city of Melton, in England.  It is near Hornby Castle, where the Melton family came from in 1306.  It has it's own crest, which is different from the Melton crest of these pages.

Sister said that all of the towns in England had their own crest.  The only part of England that I have seen is London.
