The Gregersen & Johansen Family of Sande, Norway

The following two pictures were scanned from a book that was put together by one of our family relations who still lives in Norway. This relation is Per Auen Sveaas and his web page is: http://www.sveaas.no/ If you are related to this family, Per Auen Sveaas asks that you visit his web page and furnish him with additional details of your family relations. He is especially interested in the relations who moved to America. You can obtain information from his web page for ordering a copy of this family book. This book is an outline of the "Family Gregersen" and associated family descendants. The numbering system used within the book by the writer indicates the generation and birth order of each individual. I have included these numbers in the identification of the individuals in these pictures. The first picture below indicates that Nils Gregerson was second generation and the second (2) child. His father was first generation and first child (1). Combining these numbers creates the number 12 for Nils Gregersen. A close relation, Ivar Johansen of Norway, has posted these family relationships to his web page at: http://home.c2i.net/ijohanse/slekt/wgasurs.html

Naming practices that occurred earlier in Norway can be confusing. The son was given a (first) name, then what Americans would call a last name was created by using the fathers first name and adding "sen" on the end of it. Using the father's first name with "sen" added on the end of it identifies "what you are, not who you are", i.e., you are the son or daughter of your father. The son of Niels Gregersen would be known by "Firstname Nielsen". Sometimes they used this same practice with daughters, but frequently you will find the girls first name used in conjunction with the fathers first name and "datter" added to it, i.e., "Anne Nielsdatter". Sometimes individuals assumed the name of the farm where they lived. You will note one instance of this below.

The following picture is Nils Gregersen, born May 15, 1804, Modum, Norway.

Nils shows up in the 1865 census of Norway with his name spelled "Niels Gregersen" and his occupation as "Livoremand", birth year 1803. He was living with his second wife, Rigine Andersdatter (daughter of Anders) and his son "Niels Nielsen, b. 1860".

The following picture is Anne Elisabeth Gregersen, born April 6, 1829 in Modum, Norway.

Anne was the third child of Niels Gregersen and she shows up in the 1865 census of Norway as Lise Gregersen (note here they did not spell the second name Gregersdatter). She is shown married to Anders Andersen, b. 1820 in Land, Norway, Occupation: Forpagter.

The following picture is Anne Johanne Andersen (1231), born Nov. 4, 1849, died Feb. 1, 1906

Anne shows up in the 1900 census of Norway as Anne Andersdatter, b. 1849 in Modum, Norway. Her husband is Johan Hansen, b. 1836 in Sande, Norway, Occupation: Skraedder.
