“I want to teach athletes that working hard and having fun can go hand in hand.  By preparing for a season of volleyball it will help prepare them for the next level of the game. I want the players to focus on why they first started playing volleyball, for the “LOVE” of the game.”

Jay joins the Skyline staff after following in many of the Skyline coach’s footsteps, where he also is a Texas A&M alumni member of the men’s volleyball team.  He began his career as an outside hitter on the 2nd team where he received 2nd Team All Conference his first year. While finishing up his degree at A&M and playing with the first team he helped lead his team to a 9th place finish at NIRSA Collegiate Nationals. After moving to Indiana he joined the men's team at IU where in his two years the team won the MIVA conference tournament and finished 23rd at Nationals. For the past two years, Jay has worked with Indiana University’s Volleyball program as the Director of Volleyball Operations in the Big Ten Conference. Prior to coaching at IU, he began his coaching career with Caldwell Juniors where he coached for two years while at Texas A&M. While in Indiana, he co-started Hoosierland Volleyball Club in Bloomington where he coached and served as the Recruiting Coordinator for the past two years. Jay has just recently moved back to the Dallas area where he accepted the assistant coaching position with The University of North Texas in Denton. Jay has been very involved with Skyline’s program over the past several years as his younger sister played for Skyline for two years.

"I like to build confidence within my players by being an encouragement, while helping them to focus on playing from the heart and for each other. Once this has been achieved, then the overall teamwork and effort will follow."

Heidi attended Garland Christian Academy where she led her team to their first State appearance ever and a  4th place finish. She received several all-district honors, district MVP, First Team All-State and several other awards. Heidi also played club volleyball for six years, three of which were for Skyline Juniors. While playing for Skyline, she set many club records. She led the club three years in a row in overall assists, and she also was awarded MVP honors, and led her team to two Junior Olympic National appearances, finishing 21st  and 13th in the Nation. In 2002 she led her team to finish 4th highest in the state of Texas. Heidi continued her volleyball career at the University of North Texas  where she is currently a Senior. Heidi has several years of coaching experience as she has worked many different summer camps from 1999 -2005, and has spent many hours with the Directors helping with different teams. Not only has she worked summer camps with Skyline and others, but she has also directed camps for Plano Sports Authority, and Crandall High School. Heidi will be going into her 7th season with Skyline Juniors, and this will be her fifth season to coach. As a young athlete and coach, Heidi has had more exposure to volleyball than most people her age due to the fact that she is the director's sister and has been heavily involved in the organization,  administration, and planning the future for Skyline Juniors for over six years. In 2003 she assisted the 16 RoShamBo team to a 1st place finish in the North Texas Region and a 27th place finish at J.O. Nationals. In 2004 she assisted the 16 RoShamBo team to a fourth place finish at the Lone Star National Qualify which earned her team an open bid to Nationals where they finished ranked 23rd in the nation. “I want to help athletes who give everything they have in practices and matches and never have to say ’woulda, shoulda, coulda’.  When each individual gives 100% effort 100% of the time, the score will take care of itself.  Working hard makes a strong person, a solid athlete, and a winner hands down.”

“I believe in defining team and individual goals early and then developing the foundation and strategy to achieve them. I like for the girls I coach to learn what it means to depend on their teammates while at the same time learning what it means for others to rely on them. That is why teamwork and commitment are a major focus for all of my teams. There is only one way to succeed in anything and that is to give it everything. That is what I expect from my team and that is what they can expect from me."

My focus is centered on open two-way communication, hard work, and most of all having fun. By implementing the appropriate skills and techniques, my goal as a coach is to develop the abilities of my athletes by providing a team environment that breeds confidence and challenges players to set goals, work hard and reach to exceed their expectations."

“My philosophy is simple.  Have Fun!!  I have learned through my years of playing and coaching, that having fun is a very important ingredient in the key to success.  If you are not having fun or playing with passion, then it is hard to give it all you have during practice and competition.  So many of our young athletes are put into situations of a highly competitive field, and the fun is sometimes taken away.  I have found that this usually hinders the player’s ability to improve in creativity and skill.  In my training, I try to instill a good sense of discipline in all aspects of the game, but to maintain the attitude that volleyball is just a game, and to enjoy it while you can.  I am a very vocal and energetic person and I try to pass this on to my players at all times. As a coach I am always willing to give instruction or advice to those seeking it.”

Mark graduated from South Garland High School. His Junior and Senior year he participated in the volleyball program as a roamer during practices and coached the summer league team. Mark was a starting setter and captain for four years while playing with Addison Volleyball Club. Two of those years he was awarded National All American by the AAU.  In 1995 he was also awarded tournament MVP in two tournaments.  Since graduating Mark has been an avid outdoor player.  He has also played four seasons as a setter for a men's USAV team.  In 2002 Mark was the Assistant Coach at Eastfield College and he was also the Head Coach for the 6th grade team at the Prince of Peace Catholic School. Mark is entering his fifth year with Skyline Juniors. He has coached various summer camps as well as worked three National High Performance Tryouts. Mark was the Head coach for the 16 Gold team in 2003 and took his team to a 5th place finish in the North Texas Region. In 2004 he was the Head Coach for the 16 National team where he had three top three finishes at Junior National Qualifiers, and just missed qualifying for Junior Olympic Nationals by two points in game three of all the semi-final matches at all three tournaments. This past season he was the head coach for 15 RoShamBo were he led his team to a first place finish at Regionals and qualified for J.O. Nationals.

"I believe that training the basic fundamentals of the game is key to any program.  My main focus in practices and games is that defense wins.  Having great ball control, a well-balanced, quick offense has brought my teams to the next level. My goal and desire is to win, but I like to focus on improving the girls as well for their futures."

"I believe that having the basic fundamentals is the most important aspect in the game of volleyball.  Without the basics you have no foundation.  I also believe that defense wins games and it should be stressed in the learning process.  Finally, I think it is important to instill a competitive spirit in the athlete's mentality which will help them focus on the desire to win."

"I believe, as a coach, that my players will play to their highest potential if they are motivated, encouraged, and expected to do so.  Teamwork is so important to the game of volleyball, and if the girls can realize and utilize this concept, it will better them as an individual.  This will carry on with them in the future, and help them to succeed in every aspect of life. I am very excited to join the Skyline staff this year.  I have been very impressed with the caliber of players, as well as coaches.  I feel blessed to have the opportunity to join such a great group, and I will do my best as a coach to make the club and my team the best that it can be."

“Much of what I believe in has been embedded in the Mission and Core Values of the Skyline Organization.  I constantly seek to encourage and instruct my athletes as often as possible.  I see myself not only as a coach but as a ‘trainer”; a trainer of fundamentals, disciplines and responsibilities.  It is my goal to teach my athletes to play hard no matter who their opponent is while always reinforcing the importance of keeping the game fun and enjoyable.”  My favorite quote is from Colleen Hacker…”The object in any team sport is to transform the group from a mere collection of talented individuals into a highly cohesive unit so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

"I believe that as a player, hard work and the right attitude can be a killer combination. I also believe that it should be fun. As a coach, it is my job to make sure that the players possess those traits. They need to prove that they want to be out there on the court through their hard work and a no-giving-up attitude. The result will be a lot of fun for the girls."
