The Woollards, Woolards, Wollards, and their Descendants in America from 1650

By Janes K. Wollard, First edition, was published after 37 years of research by the author and 38 contributors in 1999.  The volume was described, by the author as an "illustrated" genealogy of the Woollard-Woolard-Wollard Family. Comprising more than 17,000 descendants and their spouses, 837 pages of text, 63 pages (6 columns) of names index, 652 pictures, 34 maps, 50 documents and 5 large charts, the book measured 8 1/2"x11"x2" thick, hard bound with bucram and weighed 7 pounds. The original is unfortunately out of print, motivating a re-print effort culminating in an all digital third edition, extensively revised and augmented by Janes K. Wollard and Sylvester L. Willard and many other contributors. The Digital Edition © 2009 by Janes K. Wollard and Sylvester L. Willard is edited and published under license by Digital Editions (Richard Bingham, editor and publisher), Oceanport, New Jersey, September, 2009.

The book principally documents at least 14 generations of two distinct progenitors, Samuel Woollard and Capt William Woolard/Woolward. Samuel arrived in North Farnham Parish, on Colonial Virginia’s Northern Neck between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers in 1650 accompanied by Mary and George Woollard. Capt William arrived in Virginia’s Tidewater, via Isle Of Wight County described as a mariner in abt. 1670.  Early speculation that Capt William was the single progenitor of the NC Woolards, et al lineage is not supported by recently begun analysis of the YDNA of his putative descendants.  Martin Woolard/Willard and Samuel Frederick Woolard represent two very distinct family trees.  There may be additional distinct lineages yet to be identified based on YDNA analysis.  Additional male YDNA contributors are solicited to fill gaps and extend our understanding of these kinships and their linkages.

Of 53 chapters, six cover descendants of Samuel, 22 cover known and speculated descendants of Capt William. The remaining 27 cover families of uncertain origin, 12 of these suggest, by virtue of juxtaposition, descent from Capt. William; another two suggest descent from Samuel. One chapter is devoted to the descendants of freedmen, formerly slaves of John Woolard. Four short chapters are devoted to families of the name in England and Australia.
