Ke
Po'okela Cultural Foundation
held its
1st Annual Kaulana Na Pua Golf Tournament
under beautiful sunny skies on Saturday, October 10, 1998 at the
Los Amigos Country Club
7525 Quill Drive - Downey, CA (562) 923-9696
An outstanding good time was experienced by all the participants in
this sold out four man best ball scramble event. The leading team was never
established until late in the round with Team #7 (aka Team Lokahi) holding
on to take first place, with #6 and #9 finishing 2nd, and #2 and #3 a close
3rd. The women's long drive was taken by Ho'oulu of Team #1 and the Men's
long drive changed hands several times until a 290 yard blast by Kalani
Childs of Team #7 proved to be the winner. Must've been those "special"
balls he was using. The men's closest to the pins, especially on #9 (233
yards), were a great challenge. Unfortunately the women were unable to
place it on the green from the tee. However, all five of the women participants
took home hats in appreciation for their efforts.
The awards were presented (results below) during intermission at the
Makaha Sons concert.
Needless to say, with 1500 people in attendance, there was a lot of hootin'
and hollerin'. Typical of Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart, always ready
for a good time.
Next year we are planning to make it bigger and better and include a
lu'au dinner immediately following the tournament to distribute the awards.
Big MAHALO to all of the participants. Special thanks to the staff at
Los Amigos Country Club for their hospitality, we look forward to next
years tournament. A personal thanks to Ho'oulu, the tournament co-chair,
for her assistance.
A hui hou e malama pono, Ka'imi.
