Kaulana Na Pua

The Best in Hawaiian Hula & Music

Kaulana Na Pua Aha Mele Mua 1996

On Friday, July 26th 1996 a Hula and Chant Workshop was instructed by renowned hula masters Pualani Kanaka`ole Kanahele, Nalani Kanaka`ole Zane and Halau `O Kekuhi at Loyola Marymount University. Over 100 attendees were divided up into three groups : beginners, advanced, and kumu/alaka`i. After 3 hours of instruction, participants shared their new knowledge with the entire group.

On Saturday evening, July 27th, 1996, Kaulana Na Pua Aha Mele Mua 1996 Concert Series was held at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center in Redondo Beach, California. Over 1000 attendees enjoyed the kahiko repertoire of Halau `O Kekuhi and the Hawaiian music of Ho`okena.

Recipients of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, Halau `O Kekuhi has received the responsibility of continuing the classic mele hula and mele oli tradition through generational transmission, accounting for seven (7) generations of Kumu Hula.

Ho`okena's (to satisfy thirst) primary focus is to explore new ways to interpret old Hawaiian favorite songs as well as contributing new original compositions to help expand and perpetuate the growth of traditional Hawaiian music. Winning three awards at the 1991 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and several nominations in succeeding years, Ho`okena has produced four recordings under the Ho'omau label : "Thirst Quencher", "Choice of the Heart", "Na Kai Ewalu", and their most recent "Ho`okamaha'o". Joining Ho`okena was Hula Halau `O Na Meakanu O Laka O Hawai`i performing `auana interpretations of the melodic voices and intricate arrangements that is uniquely Ho`okena.
