The Center for U.S. / Mexico Alliances for Community Renewal, founded at the University of North Texas (UNT) in 1995, works to develop and strengthen community-building activities in the United States and Mexico through teaching, research and service opportunities.

The mission of the Center, in cooperation with the UNT School of Community Service, is to provide a structure for the development, expansion, and coordination of opportunities that strengthen community building and collaborative bi-national activities in Mexico and the United States.

  These activities include, among others:

  • faculty-led service learning opportunities for students in U.S. and Mexican communities

  • the development and implementation of service learning study abroad opportunities in the Dallas metroplex for Mexican students;

  • the exchange of faculty involved in providing technical assistance and research-based activities that are linked to community renewal projects

  • international conferences, seminars, and workshops to promote the mission of the Center.

The Center focuses on the alleviation of poverty through assistance in several areas of sustainable community development:

  • natural resource management

  • entrepreneurship development

  • community organization

  • educational advancement

  • community policing techniques and

  • program development for the care of the elderly.

It is the only center of its kind in Texas.
