“Rolling up your sleeves and doing service leads to good learning and research. You can't just teach about sustainable communities from textbooks. You need action.”

-- Syl Flores, Director

Field Schools

Short-term Field Schools allow students to apply theories and skills related to community renewal giving back to build a stronger community and to preserve prosperity in Mexican communities. Each year the center assists in taking more than 125 UNT and area high school students to Mexican field schools to work, live and experience the culture.

Sustainable community projects conducted by students in Mexico are different from service projects of church groups or other organizations. The short-term projects are directly related to what the students study in class, and includes research- related  study opportunities focusing on poverty, culture, and international development.

They're not just doing a one-time project. They're planting seeds to carry on sustainable community renewal.

Contact the Center or the International Studies Office for more information.
