Your newsletter is back and with some really exciting news! First and foremost, we’re thrilled to tell you all about this year’s annual fundraiser, a raffle sponsored by the Literacy Council. The prizes are outstanding, as are their generous donors. Just feast your eyes on the raffle items that will be won with the purchase of a raffle ticket.

Cedar Park & El Amistad, Round Rock

2nd Prize: 27" GE stereo color TV – donated by Cedar Park Rotary Club

3rd Prize: Sony 26X camcorder – private donation

4th Prize: Quasar VCR – donated by JC Penney, Lakeline Mall

Raffle tickets can be obtained for a $5.00 contribution from the Round Rock office at 2109 North Mays, or from any board member. The drawing will be held on Sunday, October 18 at Old Settlers Park on the final day of the Sesquicentennial celebration.

This is our only fundraiser and we’re really counting on your support to make it an overwhelming success. The prizes offered should make it a ‘piece of cake’ to get raffle tickets out to family and friends. Let’s give everyone a chance at these great prizes. Help us go that extra mile for the Literacy Council.

GED Commencement

Our May 22 GED graduation in Cullen auditorium at Southwestern University (SWU) was a resounding success. Twenty-one students received diplomas. Many thanks to Dr. Marc Nigliazzo, president of Temple College, who gave the commencement address (and handed out diplomas), Ed Komandosky, our board president for serving as master of ceremonies, SWU for providing the graduation site, and Richarte High School staff for helping us get through our first solo graduation with very few bumps.

We’re very proud of the 21 graduates – everyone represented a success story. Congratulations to each of you and best of luck in all your future endeavors!

Merci Beaucoup!

The Literacy Council of Williamson County gratefully acknowledges, for the third year, a generous donation of paperback books and dictionaries by the Noontime Family and Community Education Club of Georgetown. Thank you for standing with us to better serve the community.

Student Picnic

We’re planning a "down-home" picnic to give a pat on the back to our students for their accomplishments. Looks like late fall (and cooler weather) would be the best time. Give Janice a holler if you have any ideas or want to volunteer. Specifics as to date and time will be forthcoming. Check it out at www.flash.net/~lcwc

Tutor Tip LCWC has a good source for tutors of ESL students. "Hands On" is a periodical that provides articles of interest, crossword puzzles, grammar exercises, etc. Call Janice for details.
