Omino Go, or Tetromino Go, by R. Wayne Schmittberger This is a variation on Go, which Schmittberger (editor of GAMES magazine) published in his excellent book, New Rules for Classic Games. Instead of playing one stone per turn, players are allowed to play four tiles as long as they are connected edgewise. But to diminish Black’s first-turn advantage, Black can only play two tiles on the first turn. Schmittberger suggests using a 15x15 board, and he uses “one-inch square tiles as pieces. This creates nice visual patterns and makes the ‘omino’ theme more apparent.” [Schmittberger, p. 63] My suggestion is to use Deluxe Scrabble™ equipment, with another set of tiles from an ordinary Scrabble™ set. The board size is 15x15 as required, and the Deluxe set’s dark tiles contrast with the ordinary set’s light ones. (Play the tiles letter-side down, of course.) To form a blank playing surface (without the Double Word Score marks, etc.), carefully pull off the clear plastic cover, and turn over the paper lining. Presto, a “factory-quality” set! (The position shown above is from New Rules for Classic Games.) |
