Shoreline and Shallow Marine Reservoirs: Utah

We will visit what are arguably the best continuous exposures of shoreline systems in the world.  These Upper Cretaceous shorelines are exposed for over 150 miles from near Price, Utah to Grand Junction, Colorado.  We will examine the coastal barrier systems, wave dominated deltas, and offshore shelf bar sands for both high-stand and low-stand systems.  We will see the paludal back-side and marine front-side facies.  We will look at the depositional record, geometry, and trap types for these units. In most basins these are one of the two most common producing reservoirs.

The upper Cretaceous section at Helper, Utah.           One of the 100-foot plus coastal bars we will study.
Here we see coastal bars, the paludal facies, and       This is the Sego bar near the townsite of Sego,
the incisedvalley deposits we will study in detail.     Utah. Person for scale in lower left corner.
