Repairing Damaged or Loose Grout
It is very unlikely that you will be able to match grout colors
perfectly.
The best way to match is to get a grout sample chart (try Customs
or Mapei Brands) and place it next to the existing grout.
Find the closest color match. If the color you use is lighter
and a little
more water - if it's darker add a little less water.
Typically joints larger than 1/8" will use a sanded
grout, while 1/8" or smaller joints will use
non sanded grouts.
Try this procedure in an inconspicuous area to
test.
Preparation:
-
1.) Clean area to be repaired with vinegar and water solution.
-
2.) Remove any loose or damaged grout being careful not to chip tile.
-
3.) Dampen grout joints thoroughly, but leave no standing water in joints.
Grouting Procedure:
-
1.) Use a clean bucket and clean potable water.
-
2). Add dry grout powder to water and mix slowly.
-
3.) Grout should be a thick paste consistency.
-
4.) Allow mix to sit in bucket (slake) for 5 - 10 minutes.
-
5.) Re-mix grout for 1 or 2 minutes - grout should be a creamy consistency.
-
6.) Spread the grout over tiles and into the joints, filling them completely.
-
7.) Remove excess grout with squeegee or grout float.
-
8.) Let grout sit until it gets firm.
-
9.) Clean using minimum amount of water.
-
10.) Allow to dry until a dust or haze appears on the tile.
-
11.) Polish with cheesecloth or towel to remove.
-
Don't let the haze set too long or you will have a hard time getting
it off.
-
Wash in direction of grout joint to reduce size, wash across the joints
to keep them fuller.
