Wildebeest @ SXSW

Thursday Night at Hog Wild

Held in Austin, TX in March 2001, South by Southwest is one of the largest and important music festivals in the world. Bands from around the globe and representatives from the major players in the music industry attend this yearly conference and backyard social to see the hottest new bands, unheard-of acts, and discuss the latest trends in the music business. Wildebeest Records hosted its own showcase featuring three of our artists—McLemore Ave., the Sir Finks, and the Waistcoats. The festivities kicked off Thursday evening with an in-store at vintage toy and clothing shop Hog Wild. A sizable crowd turned out to see all three bands play a short set and to catch a rare public appearance by the Wildebeest girls, Michelle, Pei-San, and Andrea.
McLemore Ave. got the music started with former Sir Fink Damien Llanes sitting in on drums, joining Patrick Barker-Benfield on Hammond B-3, Landis Armstrong on guitar, and Chris Johnson on bass.
The Sir Finks then swung into action, showing off their new lineup with Joe Emery (formerly of Death Valley) on guitar and vocals, Mike Guerrero on lead guitar, Jason Gentry on bass, and Stephen May on drums. On this number, Joe looks a little "Wound Up!"
The Waistcoats wrapped up the musical entertainment amidst the racks of vintage threads. That's Jan-Herman "Stringwrecker" Veldkamp on guitar and lead vocals, E.J. "Blind Johnny Welder" Kloosterboer on bass and shades, Gerry "Doc" Burger on tambourine and backing vocals, and Jack "Mad Genius" Outhuis on drums.
Another satisfied customer, or is that Herman the German signaling that he approves of the free beer? To Herman's right in the red jacket is D.J. Sue Davis, host of Austin' monthly '60's dance party The Fuzz Club. To Herman's left in the black shirt is Mark Stultz, lead guitarist for the Sandblasters.
