The French Foreign Legion Historical Society

Welcome to the Home Page of the French Foreign Legion Historical Society. We are non-profit, tax-exempt organization, whose function is to portray the history of the Foreign Legion from 1939 to 1954. In this capacity, we cover World War II and the Indochina war. By doing this, we seek to honor all Legionnaires, especially those, many forever unknown, who paid the extreme sacrifice for a country they were never be able to call their own.

We do not attempt to glorify the life of a Legionnaire. As those who have served will tell you, it is a difficult and dangerous profession. Yet in this day of political correctness, reduced standards for active duty, lackluster performance, and a general disdain for the soldier's profession, the Legion is considered by many to be the finest fighting force in the world.

Contrary to popular belief, fostered by Hollywood and authors either unfamiliar with or harboring a grudge against the Legion, it is not a haven for criminals and cutthroats. Each week the Legion accepts only the best (perhaps 3 in 10) among those who seek to wear the kepi blanc.

Follow the links below to learn more about our organization. In addition, view the photo galleries where we display photos from not only our own events, but also photos given to us by current and former legionnaires from all over the world. It is our hope that, upon viewing this site, you will have a better understanding of one of the most famous, yet least understood, military organizations in the world - La Légion Étrangère.

I would like to at this time extend a sincere thank-you to all former and current legionnaires who have so graciously shared some of their history with us. It is important that we understand as much as we can about the Legion, the men who serve in it, and its history and traditions from the first-hand experience of veterans like you. Of course, we can read about the Legion, but doing in doing so we can at best present a somewhat 'bookish' first person impression, which does not do these brave men justice. Thank you for your stories, your comments, and most of all, your support. Vive la Legion!
