Drakan: The Ancients' Gates (Sony) - The Ice Caves

Last modified on April 20th, 2003

Head south from there toward the entrance to the Ice Caves. Hover above it and then fly southeast toward a small plateau below, with two campfires burning upon it. Arokh will advise caution with "Be careful Rynn, we don't know where this portal may lead!". Have them land and have her dismount. Smash the barrels on the sides, which may be empty. Enter the cave and clean out the chests and barrels for 47 gold, then have her step on the teleporter. She'll encounter the dead Northman partner of the man with the stein, whom she spoke with back at the cave in the Northmen's Camp, just a bit downhill and 200 gold nearby. Head northwest along the snow wall and follow it forward until she reaches a spot where she can clamber partway up and then with a jump or two, make it the rest of the way to level snow, where she finds a skeleton and a Life Potion. Save your game progress before taking her sliding forward down the incline. She will immediately run in to three or four attacking Ice Golems. Fortunately a protruding ice berm will mostly protect her for the moment. Head over to the protection of a nearby tree to provide cover from the incoming fire. Have her cast Time Slow, then head north to attack them preferably using the Lastat Blade, which will help heal her as it takes them out. About three hits will take one down. They are usually found in sets of three, although fortunately, their fire is generally not triangulated upon her, but can freeze her on contact. Her goal is the Visionary Amethyst, which will be found at the extreme northern end of the area. Many more of the frozen guardians will attempt to impede her progress. Have her move generally north from tree to tree and hide behind one when she receives incoming fire. Then cast Time Slow and head after her attackers. It's a very good idea to save your game status after every battle or two!

She'll encounter another set of five Ice Golems as she moves north from the first battle site. She can hide behind a tree on the right when she receives the first of the incoming fire and cast Time Slow, then continue toward them. Use other trees in the area for protection while moving from enemy to enemy, and take them out one at a time. Their fire is pretty easy to avoid when Time Slow is active and fairly difficult without it. Continue to the north down the tree lined corridor. She'll receive fire from a lone Ice Golem standing near the end of the corridor, then covering fire from another Ice Golem up on the hill to the left. Take out the first Ice Golem, then head for the Stone ruins, which are soon visible off to the northeast. It's populated with three Scavengers and three to four barrels, which can be smashed for 0 - 72 gold. Get 19 gold from the chest around behind. Save your game status and then have her backtrack to the south. The second Ice Golem will have made it down the hill by this time. Take it out, then turn west and continue north up the hill, where she can turn right at the top and battle two more Golems. Continue on to the north to the other side of the hill to find another Ice Golem guarding a set of ruins containing a duplicate puzzle piece (5, South) and five barrels with 45 - 100 gold, and two chests, which hold four sacks of 46 - 67 gold. Backtrack south down the incline and save your game progress, then cast time Slow and continue north before reaching the bottom near the ruin.

Three more Ice Golems will immediately attack. A fourth one, which is farthest away, is standing on an incline to the north. Take it out and continue west up the rise, where another three Ice Golems attack. After the first one is destroyed, try to line up her attackers such that the farther away Ice Golem hits her immediate attacking Ice Golem instead of Rynn. Recast Time Slow as required and take them out. The passage to the southwest just before she reaches the fallen statue, leads to more ruins containing the exit teleporter. Seven more Ice Golems lurk around the fallen statue of Krozvokt. Take them out then head up the short incline left of the head and grab the eye using the 'L1' button and she'll now have the Visionary Amethyst. Doing so will destroy any remaining active Ice Golems. Rynn will say she hopes the wizard can use all this junk. If she doesn't, check that all four required items are in your inventory. It's all too easy to have dropped something inadvertently. She now has the "Return the required items to the wizard Zeggoro." quest. Continue south back down the incline and then slide southwest down the incline and walk down the passageway to the set of stone ruins and the teleporter back out. Loot the four barrels for 12 - 80 gold and the chest of 1 - 71 gold. Ensure her health is fully restored, then have her step on the teleporter. Save your game progress before leaving the immediate area.

Two Blackwings attack as soon as she exits the cave. Have her get on Arokh as soon as possible, and take to the air to do battle with them. Return southwest to the cave at the nearby Northmen's Camp and there may be a third Blackwing to take out on the way. Land and enter the cave and repair her weapons and armor. Buying twenty or so Life Potions would be a good idea now, as they'll be in somewhat short supply from here on. Ensure that she has her armor and favorite melee weapon equipped before leaving. Fly south and there may be a couple more Blackwings to deal with. Continue until they can go no farther and land at the entrance to Ravenshold and have her ride Arokh on through. Save your game status when prompted. Exit the other end of the cave and fly south until they can head west to Zeggoro's Tower and have them prepare to land on the area in front. Zeggoro will greet them and note that all the items have been found and that the Northmen need to clear out the Half-Men from around the barrier and that he can't waste his magic power on travel. He suggests that Arokh will need to carry him to Shiverbane and that Rynn will have to accompany the Northmen. She protests that he will be better able to deal with the Half-Men due to his superior firepower, but quickly relents when Arokh points out that he's more capable of carrying Zeggoro, than she is. Save your game status at the prompt.
