Drakan: The Ancients' Gates (Sony) - Khossa Vole

Last modified on February 2nd, 2005

If you had her return to the Blacksmith's Shop, when last suggested, there's probably no need to do so now. Otherwise go repair her badly damaged weapons and armor, and restock any needed potions. Check your quest list for the Necromancer side quest. Head to Jade's Magic Emporium, if Rynn doesn't already have it and Jade will give it to her. Have Arokh fly her back into town, then head to the northwest over the small lake and toward the left valley. Land on the grassy knoll on the right just before the first tree and save their progress. The canyon just beyond contains four Explosive Crossbow sites positioned along the canyon walls. Pop just over the top of the tree and target the first one almost dead ahead. Arokh will note the presence of Bone Dragons just after that. Consider retreating and saving after any one of them (i.e. crossbow or dragon) is defeated. Try to take out the crossbows first. They're actually far easier to destroy the second time you play thorough the game. The first Bone Dragon is lying in wait nestled next to the mountainside on the left. It's more difficult to destroy than the Blackwings and fairly tough, possessing lightning breath, which has a greater destructive radius than Arokh's flames. Try to edge out into the canyon and get a lock on it before it comes completely into view. They have a chance of taking it out without getting fried this way. If Arokh gets badly injured, fly off back to town in retreat, and use a Potion. It will follow them, but not all the way back to town. Definitely save each time they defeat one or even after doing some damage. Your cue to retreat is two hits from the Bone Dragon. They may survive another one, but not two. Note that they'll likely have been followed and the Bone Dragon(s) will be found closer to town on the way back, than where Rynn and Arokh last saw it/them.

If you thought the first one was tough, they'll meet up with three at once as they move into the next valley. Target the nearest one, which will probably be off to the right, and fire at it while sideslipping to minimize hits taken. Don't hesitate to retreat to town after taking a couple of hits and have Rynn restore their health. You may well encounter one or more Bone Dragons much nearer to town on the way back toward the Necromancer's tower. Once all three are defeated, head towards the big ugly black lump, suspended in mid air. Land on the platform surrounding the entrance, and dismount and enter. Arokh tells Rynn to be careful as the Necromancer's power is likely to be strong indeed if he's unlocked the Gravestone's power. Rynn seems more worried about being left behind. Note the room straight ahead. This is where she will return to after the Necromancer has been destroyed. Have her run up the circular stairs on the right and have her step on the teleporter, Save their progress when prompted to do so.

Follow the circular ramp up the outside of the tower and use the bow's sniper view to take a look at the surrounding terrain. Well Toto, it looks like we're not in Kansas anymore. When you're ready for her to continue, head back down and then west down the hill. Turn north and continue down toward the ruins. Send her through the arch as she reaches the bottom and two skeletons pull themselves up from graves slightly to her right and stumble toward her on the attack. Two swipes with the Firestrike, with some residual fire damage in between, will turn them into flaming heaps of bones. Continue around and take out the next set of skeletons, who arise from graves, then get the 108 gold from the nearby chests and smash the lone barrel for another 50 gold. Head east through the arch across the bridge and through the second arch, and two more skeletons attack. Head through the arch on the left and open the chests for 57 gold and a Full Mana potion, then smash the barrel for a 50 - 75 gold. A third skeleton will rise from near the gravestone at the foot of the three trees to attack her after she's left the ruins and continues to move forward to the east. The entrance to the next area lies at the end of a slightly tricky jump. Save your game before attempting it just in case. Have her run and jump as close to the end of paving rock, which extends past the others, as possible and she should land in the next area. Save the game's status again. Two more skeletons rise to attack, as Khossa Vole's rather spooky message emanates from a distance. Grab 54 gold plus a Full Mana and Health Elixir potion from the chests and a bag with 35 - 56 gold pieces from the barrel and head southeast for the next bridge. Looks like there's another long jump in the offing and Khossa Vole is none to happy to have her here. Save first just in case. If done correctly, she'll grab on to the following ledge. Save immediately again!

The flying Khossa Vole mummy form is a major pain and can quickly decimate Rynn with its split green energy shot, if she attacks it. It may well be floating just up ahead and if so, have her move on past it to the right and just ignore it. This area is home to lots of skeletons, which will occasionally drop Health Elixir, Mana, or Potions of Life. Follow the path to the south and head for the relative safety of the cave entrance. Retreat just inside and heal and save, then run back out and around some more and make sure you've got everything. She may gain the next experience level around this point and you should consider adding it to Archery or Magic, but probably Archery if her Magic skill is already at two.

Head west from the cave entrance and find the second tree with the Lastat's Blade sword stuck in it. Take this sword, which absorbs life from her enemies and transfers it to Rynn. Unfortunately, she needs Melee Skill level five, which she doesn't currently posses, to use it. Return east to the cave entrance. Enter and save their progress. As she gets downstairs, she can see Khossa Vole's body floating in the center of the large room inside and will remark "Well, well, look what I found!". Explore the room before going for Khossa Vole's body. There are four alcoves in this room in the east and west walls. Walking along these walls will cause an alcove to open and reveal a skeleton when entered. Down at the other end of these walls, is a second alcove with two chests and a barrel, which must be opened with a stroke from the equipped sword. Get 132 gold from the chests and 50 gold from the barrel in the northeastern alcove. Find 129 gold in the chests and 44 gold in the barrel in the southeastern alcove. From a position inside any of the alcoves, heal her, and save her progress. Switch to her bow and target its suspended in air body. Have her shoot it a few times to trigger the appearance of the mummy form. You can also try casting Time Slow and then Ice Blast, with which six blasts will take it down. It's other attack consists of a green skull, which will home in on her. Switch to her melee weapon to finish it off. The first time through the game, I gained the next experience level just before one more hit from the mummy was going to be game over. Once vanquished, continue southeast or southwest (depending on which side she took refuge on) into the newly opened alcove, which the mummy burst from. Smash the lone barrel for 50 gold and pass nearby the chests to open them and obtain 205 gold and the Gravestone from the pillar to enable the exit teleporter. Head west into the room with the blue glow and step on the teleporter to return to the room straight in from the entrance to the Necromancer's abode. Call Arokh and mount when he shows up. You may have to have her call Arokh repeatedly and it can take quite some time for him to land, and he may not acknowledge that he's been called. Fly through that pretty sparkle near the white peak to the east to obtain his devastating Sonic Breath. You can now press the 'L1' button, while she's riding him to switch between his breath related weapons. Turn and head north to fly back to the magic shop, where Jade, who's grateful for the Necromancer's destruction and the recovery of the Gravestone, offers to teach her any spell (that's within her current skill level) for free. The only one she doesn't already have is Combust, so go ahead and buy it for nothing. If she's already learned all the spells available at her level, you'll be able to return here later to take her up on it.
