Drakan: The Ancients' Gates (Sony) - Toadfist's Lair

Last modified on April 13th, 2003

Head out and south back to the cave entrance and take the Blasting Pot back to the sealed passageway. Head toward it and she'll place the Blasting Pot near it and back away. Boom it's now open. Save your game status. Head into the room with the big idol and at least four Trogs will come in to attack as she moves around. Retreat back through the entrance, which was blown open, and equip her bow and wait for them to be targetable. They will not venture through the doorway! Once the coast is clear, re-enter and turn north. Go and smash the three barrels for 22 gold, then continue in the opposite direction. Get another 18 gold from these barrels, then continue to the lift. Have her equip her bow and activate the lift to bring it up. Have her ride it down, get off and right back on, and ride it back up. She can now target and destroy the two nearby Trogs with impunity. Get 2 gold from the barrel near the two crates on the right. Get 14 gold from the closer of the two dead Trogs. Finally find 30 gold in the three barrels on the left. Head for the locked gate and take care of the three Trogs on the other side of the gate with her bow. You can't target them, just pick a spot where the arrows will hit and wait for them to stand in that spot. Return to the lift and take it down. If you're lucky, the riding of the lift up and down will have killed the Trog below, otherwise take it out for 12 gold. Head west where a Trog Mage and three or four more Trogs await her in the small lake ahead. They can all be taken out with her bow. Pick up 28 gold dropped in the water, then head around behind the ruins in the water and grab another 2 gold. Finally get a Potion of Life and 20 gold in a small alcove to the northwest. Take the left passageway and smash the barrels for 10 gold. Defeat the four Trogs in the next chamber and get some gold from the two barrels at the west end. There's 20 more gold in the three barrels to the northeast. Be careful of the Mage Trog, who's in the room beyond to the north, and several other Trogs, who come racing down the hill. Retreat up the stairs she came down, then turn and take them out with her bow after you've lured them into this room. Head into the room to the south and grab a Health Elixir from the shelf, then get 14 gold from the barrels at the other end. Now take the central northern passageway down. Time to rescue the arrogant idiot she met a while back. Have her walk over past his cell, pull the lever, and have a chat with him. Check out the barrels in the other cell, one of which contains a Potion of Invisibility and the other a bag of 6 gold. Head back upstairs and go through the hole in the wall where you can see a fallen column and the Trog Mage was. Have her continue up the hill, and then save your position. Head through the stone hall into the kitchen. Keep the shelf between the two Trogs in here and her and she can easily take them out with her bow. She may have to temporarily step around the shelf to target the nearest one, but can then retreat behind the shelf and finish it off. Get a Health Elixir from the barrels on the west wall. Then continue out and upstairs to the east.

More unfriendly noises in the Library! Venture cautiously in and target and slay the two Trogs. Now note that the shelf in the northeast corner has a ladder attached to it. Climb up it and save your game. Jump across to the square stone ring supporting the central brazier. A couple of bags containing 100 gold pieces and a Rusty Short Sword await her in the back corners. Return to the shelf with the ladder, and walk off back onto it, and then climb down. See'll take some damage if she falls. Head out the southeast door and run up the stairs. Take out the Trog in the passageway with her bow, then grab the 8 gold it dropped. There're three more Trogs in here. Draw them to the entrance and fill them full of arrow holes. Head into the eastern alcove and gather two Health Elixirs and 14 gold from the good barrels. Head down the west passageway and lure five Trogs back into the main room. Retreat to the hallway she came up from and take them all out with arrows. They will drop 52 gold. This will make her later journey a bit easier. Get 20 gold from the four barrels to the north. Equip her bow and jump over the cages to reach a stone passageway behind them. Enter, then turn east and walk carefully up the dirt ramp. Target the large spider, guarding a treasure chest containing a Full Mana, Life, and Invulnerability Potions! If the spider attacks, just have her retreat into the stone passageway as the spider won't follow her into there. Ensure her health is replenished before jumping through the hole into the room below. She'll fare better if she can land on the top cage and painlessly drop down to the lower cages, and from there to the ground. It's relatively clear sailing for a little bit as you cleared out this area, before jumping over the cages, and four more beyond the nearby gate. Pick up any treasure dropped by the gate, then head north until she encounters a single Trog near the three empty barrels at the turn east. Continue down the passageway and turn north to reach the area beneath the tree, that she originally saw from far above. Head forward and grab the Cypher Rune, then return the way she came. A cut scene unfolds showing a nearby grate opening and releasing three Trogs right behind her, as she departs. Kill them to pick up 20 - 30 gold and a Life Potion, then head into the newly opened tunnel to the south. Save your game status, then continue along through the Dining Hall. A Trog Mage will attempt to snipe at her from an elevated position a bit farther on. Use the cover of the stacked cages to snipe back at it. A couple more Trogs will impede her progress and may drop a little gold when slain. Toadfist's throne room can be seen below from the next room. Head west and take out two or three Trogs, then have her bring the lift up. Take it down, then continue downhill. When she reaches the barrels, smash them for a Life Potion. Heal and save your game, then enter Toadfist's throne room.

Stay in close and mercilessly attack. Heal as required. He has a long range magic attack, which almost always hits her, no matter how you try to dodge it. He also can use a simple swipe, or a lengthy whirlwind attack. A successful weapon parry can interrupt his whirlwind attack. Just keep flailing away at him. She can get his helm when the battle's over. Then get the contents of the chests (17 gold) and barrels (50 gold) in the northeast corner. Head over to the northwest corner and loot the chest of a Life Potion. Continue back out through the entrance. Make your way back to the lift and take it back up. Head straight north, but make a detour down to where the Mage Trog was firing lightning at her from a high ledge and check for a Life Potion. Head south and circle back up around to the north until she exits the cave and comes to a bridge, where you should save your game. Appears to be quite peaceful here, but looks can be deceiving. Have her start across the bridge and as she nears the middle, it breaks, dropping her into the swamp below, where four Trog Mages are shooting at the arrogant idiot she rescued earlier. Snipe at them from behind trees or just run over to each one and give it a few whacks, but beware of the secondary bolts.

Once he's rescued, he gives her Nichol's Tome, a mystical book to unlock the magical Earth Blade. Head north, northwest through the swamp until shortly thereafter she reaches a circular stone platform. Have her step up onto it and she'll read from it and unlock the door. Definitely save your game here. Send her into the tomb and be prepared for battle the minute she acquires the Earth Blade. Equip it immediately, since she'll probably not survive without it. She can't parry with it until all its charges have been used (press the 'Circle' button to use a charge). Four Skeletons pop up, one in each corner of the room. They chase her around, hacking at her with their axes. Running attacks are best here and definitely keep moving. She'll be able to exit the tomb, once the skeletons have been defeated. There is a way to avoid the fight. The downside is that you lose the battle experience. Line her up so that her back is to the sword and she's facing the door (which is still open). Press 'L1' to grab the sword and run for the door. Have her roll as she gets near it and she should make it through and the half emerged skeletons will disappear. Head southeast and turn north at the torch and go up the path you may have previously seen. Continue along the path and through the cave. Kill the final three Trogs and loot their treasure (Health Elixir, 64 gold. Pull the lever to open the gate, which you saw after she first entered the swamp. Cross the bridge and speak to the man to receive a Life Potion and a Diamond (225 gold) for saving his daughter. Be aware, that she can't re-enter the area once she leaves. Head back out through the water and exit. Jassad appears, dressed all in black, and calls on Myschala to cease and desist, but she's not having any of it and bades him go away.

Head up the hill and speak to the guard, who's amazed she's come back alive, if you wish. Have her return to town and Arokh and Zola Dane, seer and adviser to Lady Myscalla, will be waiting in the courtyard between the Alchemist's and Blacksmith's. There's talk of restoring the four gates, two in the Northlands, which are closer, while the other two are in the Desert of Tears. Zola Dane counsels against this. Hmm methinks he doth protest too much! Arokh's' operating instructions are then given. She now has the "Search for a guide to Ravenshold in the Andrellian Isles." quest. Head in to see the blacksmith and give him Toadfist's Helm, for which he gives her the promised 2,000 gold. She now should buy and equip the Chain Armor and Steel Shield. Nest stop over at the Alchemist's and buy some health potions. Finally mount Arokh and fly due south to Jade's Magic Emporium. Land out front, enter and buy the Ice Blast and Time Slow spells. Exit and fly southeast, then turn due south toward the Monastery.
