10. Mary3 Jewett (Maximilian2, Edward1) was born on 18 February 1646/47 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.7,30 She married David Haseltine, son of Robert Haseltine and Anna [_____], on 26 November 1668 in Merrimack, Essex County, Massachusetts.32

Her married name was Hazeltine.33

David Haseltine was also known as David Hazeltine.33 He was born circa 1644 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.32 He died on 31 August 1717 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.12

15. Joseph3 Jewett (Maximilian2, Edward1) was born circa 1655 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.15 He married Mary [_____] on 20 January 1731/32 in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts.35 He died on 29 October 1735 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.35

Rebecca Law was born on 1 June 1655 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.10,36 She died on 26 December 1729 at age 74.10

The only known child of Joseph3 Jewett and Rebecca Law was:

Mary [_____] married Thomas Green.37 She married Nathaniel Gage, son of John Gage and Amy [_____], in Essex County, Massachusetts.37

There were no known children of Joseph3 Jewett and Mary [_____].

16. Sarah3 Jewett (Joseph2, Edward1) was baptized on 3 January 1635/36 in Bradford, co. Yorkshire, England.17 She married Captain Philip Nelson, son of Thomas Nelson and Dorothy Stapleton, on 24 June 1657 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.17,38,39,40 She died in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.2,38 She was buried on 17 February 1665/66 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.38,39

Captain Philip Nelson. Philip graduated from Harvard College in 1654.41 He was baptized on 22 January 1634/35 in Cottingham, co. Yorkshire, England.42 He was graduated in 1654 in Harvard College, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.39 He married Elizabeth Lowell, daughter of John Lowell and Elizabeth Goodale, on 1 January 1666 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.17,38 He left a will on 9 April 1690 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.39 He died on 19 August 1691 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 56.17,38,39

The two known children of Sarah3 Jewett and Captain Philip Nelson both born in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, were as follows:

17. Jeremiah3 Jewett (Joseph2, Edward1) was baptized on 26 December 1637 in Bradford, co. Yorkshire, England.17 He married Sarah Dickinson, daughter of Thomas Dickinson and Jennet [_____], on 1 May 1661 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.2,25,44 He died on 20 May 1714 in Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 76.2,25 He was buried in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.10

He was a soldier in King Philip's war.25 He left a will on 1 December 1713 in Essex County, Massachusetts.25

Sarah Dickinson was born on 18 October 1644 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.2 She died on 30 January 1723/24 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 79.2,25

The nine known children of Jeremiah3 Jewett and Sarah Dickinson all born in Ipswich Village, Essex County, Massachusetts, were as follows:

Hannah3 Jewett (Joseph2, Edward1) was born on 15 June 1641 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.18,17,50,9 She married John Carleton, son of Edward Carleton and Ellen Newton, say 1658/59 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.51,26,17,52,53,54 She married Christopher Babbage, son of Roger Babbage and Hester Greene, on 5 October 1674 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.55,17,56 She died after 1707 in Massachusetts.18,17

Hannah Jewett married, first, John Carlton son of Edward and Ellen Carlton. They settled in Bradford, Massachusetts, and removed to Haverhill, Massachusetts, where he died 22 January 1668. Edward Carlton, father of John, was a freeman of Rowley, Massachusetts in 1642, and had the next year a three acre house lot. He returned with his family to England, and soon sent his son John Carlton back to settle his estate in Rowley for him; but John died evidently before he was able to do so, for in the County Court records is found the following petition relative to the settlement of the estate of Edward Carlton: "To the Honoured Court now sitting at Salem this 27 of November, Anno Dom. 1678. The humble request of Christopher Babbage & Hannah his wife that whereas Mr. Edward Carlton somtimes of Rowley left an estate in New England when he went out of the country, part of which (he sending his son John Carlton by virtue of a letter of Aturney did recieved in his behalf), wee conceiving that there being some of his estate unreceive by said son, desire this Honoured Court would appoynt some of our relations, Jeremiah Jewett or Nehemiah Jewett or both to be administrators to the sayd Mr. Edward Carlton that if anything may be preserved, it may be fourth-comming to the children of said Hannah relict of said John Carlton deceased, the only heirs to any such estate (as we can conceive) , or as authority shall dispose of it & in your soe doing your servants shall pray." "Christopher Babbage." "Hannah Babbage."

"Jeremiah Jewett & Nehemiah Jewett have power of administration granted of the estate of Mr. Edward Carlton deceased, who was formly of Rowley and they are enjoyned to bring in a true inventory, at ye next court at Ipswich."

In Court at Salem 29:9:1678 "Ateste, Hilliard Verin, Clerk."

She married (2nd) Christopher Babbage son of Roger and Hester Babbage, of Totnes, England. "Widow Hannah (Jewett) Carlton of Haverhill married 5:8 mo: 1674 Christopher Babbidge son of Roger & Hester Babbidge of Totness, Devonshire, England." (Essex Antiquarian.)

He came from England in the ship "Nathaniel, John Adams Master" in 1661, and settled in Salem Massachusetts, (having married Totnes, Agnes Triggs, of Totnes, who came with him. She died at Salem, 17 November 1667, leaving two children, viz., Ruth, born 21 March 1663, and John, born 15 April 1666.) He was proprietor of common lands in Salem that year, and was made freeman in 1665. He was a tailor.

Hannah Babbage was dismissed from the church in Rowley to Salem 6 June 1665.

Hannah and her sister Patience Jewett sold a farm to John Gage. Hannah was living in Salem, Massachusetts as late as 27 November 1706. She and John Carleton purchased land on 22 May 1662 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.26 She lived on 27 November 1706 at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts.17

John Carleton was born in January 1637/38 in co. Yorkshire, England.18,57,58,59 He was also known as Lieut. John Carlton.26 He lived in February 1661 at Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.60 He was made the guardian of Patience Jewett on 26 March 1661 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.26 He was a town recorder and Clerk of the Writs between 1664 and 1668 at Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.61 He left a will on 15 January 1668 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.62 He died on 22 January 1668/69 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.18,26,63 His will was proven on 13 April 1669 in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts.62

The baptism of John Carlton is not recorded in the parish of St. Martin, Micklegate, where his parents were married, or in Barmston, his father's former residence, or in Hedon, his mother's home. All other likely parishes have been searched, but most have no early records. A large part of the Bishops' Transcripts for 1637-8 have been examined, and through a diocesan leaflet a reward was broadcast to incumbents of all Yorkshire parishes for this record, but in vain.

LIEUT. JOHN CARLETON was born probably in Yorkshire about 1637, died at Haverhill, Massachusetts, 22 Jan. 1668. (Vital Records.) He married, probably about 1658-9, HANNAH Jewett, born at Rowley, Massachusetts, 15-4 mo. (June) 1641, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Mallinson) Jewett. As "Hana Carleton widdow" she married secondly at Salem, Massachusetts, 5-8 mo. 1674, as his second wife, Christopher Babbidge of Salem, and was living as late as 27 Nov. 1706, when Christopher Babbage, Sr., of Salem, "taylor," and Hannah Babbage, his wife, sold land to their son, Christopher Babbage, Jr. (Essex Deeds, vol. 19, fo 124.)

The petition of Christopher Babbage and Hannah his wife to the Court at Salem, 27 Nov. 1678, requesting the appointment of an administrator to the estate of Mr. Edward Carlton, sometime of Rowley, for the benefit of the children of the said Hannah, represents that John Carleton was sent back from England by his father with a letter of attorney, by which he received a portion of the estate. Probably this was the power of attorney, dated 9 Aug. 1650, given to Humphrey Reyner and Joseph Jewett, but not entered in the court records until 5 Mar. 1656. If so, John Carleton probably lived with Joseph Jewett during the following two years of his minority, and so naturally at his coming of age led the second daughter of the family to the altar that the marriage remained unrecorded. In the will of Joseph Jewett, dated 15 Feb. 1660, he is named, as "my son John Carleton," one of the executors. Patience Jewett chose Mr. John Carlton as her guardian, and it was allowed by the court 26 Mar. 1661.

He soon removed to the neighboring town of Haverhill, as shown by a deed of William Holdredge and Isabell his wife to John Carleton of Haverhill, conveying fourscore acres of upland in Haverhill, 22 May 1662. He also purchased lands in Haverhill from Robert Swan in 1663, from Edward Clark in 1665, and from Robert Clements in 1666/7. On 11 Jan. 1664, John Carleton and Hannah his wife of Haverhill sold to John Gage for one hundred pounds 300 acres in Rowley, joyning to the farm of Patience Jewett. (Norfolk Deeds, vol. 2, pp. 64, 83, 84, 174; Ipswich Deeds, vol. 2, p. 222.)

In 1664 Mr. John Carleton was chosen town recorder and Clerk of the Writs for Haverhill, offices in which he continued until 1668.

From a case of Crosby vs. Swan, a writ dated 25 Mar. 1664/5 preserves his excellent penmanship with this representative autograph.

In several similar signatures he was consistent in reviving the spelling of the name used by his great-grandfather and name-sake in Yorkshire, which has been followed by most American members of the family. At a court held at Salisbury, 14 Apr. 1668, Jno. Carleton is recorded as a member of the Jury of trials; and 29 Sept. 1668 a petition was presented to Ipswich court by John Carleton and four others as selectmen of Haverhill. (Records and Files, Quarterly Courts of Essex County, vol. 3, pp. 198, 239; vol. 4, pp. 20, 120.)

It would appear that this active career was cut short by a sudden illness, for "The last will & Testament of Leift. John Carleton of Haverhill, made January: 1668" is on file tin the Essex Probate at Salem, the date, as may be observed, being just a week before his death. By this will he gave his homestead and forty acres of upland in Haverhill to Hannah his wife, the rest of his land and estate to be divided among his sons, with the customary double share to John, the eldest. This will was proved 13 Apr. 1669, and bears the endorsement "The widow Hannah Carlton did renounce her executorship." There is also filed, however, a somewhat lengthy petition of the widow Hannah, of the same date, that she may be possessed of the estate her late husband willed to her, not excepting of being executrix, and that "this honered Court would bee pleased to consider ye condition of my deare children being all but small & haipleis."

The inventory, taken 25 Jan. 1668 by George Browne, Robert Clement, and Joseph Davis, amounted to £422 12s. 8d. On 2 Sept. 1695 the children having arrived at the full age of 21 years, Peter Ayer, who had been appointed administrator of the estate, joined with John and Joseph Carlton in requesting the court to grant administration "to Edward & Thomas Carleton sonns of Mr. John Carleton deceased," and 30 June 1696 settlement of the estate by mutual agreement of the sons was reported to the court.

The administrators of the estate of John Carleton late of Haverhill, Massachusetts--deceased: present the following inventory of such lands not yet made a disposal or distribution of nor settled amongst the heirs according as the law directs; which he died seized of in the town of Haverhill.

This is all at present that we the administrators have to present which if we can agree about to divide amongst the heirs before the superior court in May next we shall present then; but if not we shall request the honorable judge of probate for Essex county to make a division of to the widow and the four children only that now remain that are heirs to said estate.

Know all men by these presents that we, Edward Carlton and Thomas Carlton, administrators to the estate of John Carlton, our father, late of Haverhill in the county of Essex within the province of Massachusetts Bay in New England having taken an inventory of the estate of said Carlton, deceased within the bounds of Haverhill aforesaid and enter the same judge of probate and register for Essex aforesaid. Which said lands we the subscribers and sons of said John Carleton deceased have agreed to divide amongst ourselves with consent of said administrators: and have divided the same by mutual consent of each other as follows: the said John Carlton and Joseph Carlton, sons of said John, deceased, by these presents do accept of the land lying and being in Haverhill aforesaid commonly called and known by the name of Oxepasture land and the orchard and house lot which was compotes adjoining thereto being about sixty or seventy acres be it more or less with all the wood timber, trees, privileges thereupon, in and belonging thereunto as their full right and whole share in the lands within the said town, hereby releasing and quitting claim unto said administrators as administrators and heirs with them to all the rest of the lands and real estate that they might claim interest in: covenanting and promising said Edward and Thomas Carlton, their brothers as heirs with them in the said estate; and hereby oblige themselves that they and their heirs and assignees shall forever hold and enjoy all other lands and privileges in the commons of Haverhill aforesaid and in the township of Haverhill that did or anyway may appertain to their said father when he died; and to his rights he died seized of: the said Edward and Thomas Carlton: hereby quit claim to said John and Joseph Carlton of said land they have accepted of as above for their share unto them and their heirs and assigns forever; promising and covenanting to and with the said John and Joseph that they and their heirs shall forever enjoy the same without any hindrance and molestation, interruption, suit or denial of them and their heirs forever always with this provision that any debts appear not yet known of due from said estate they and their heirs and executors and administrators shall pay their equal parts of such debt or debts according to the proportion they have hereby received, together with the said Edward and Thomas that this is the agreement between said parties with respect to the real estate left by said John Carlton deceased which each party for themselves and their heirs, executors, administrators and assignees have and do oblige hereby themselves unto: in testimony hereof they have set to their hands and seals this 30th June 1696.

He was living in Salem as late as 27 November 1706.17 He was baptized on 17 April 1631 in Totnes, co. Devonshire, England.79,17 He married Agnes Trigg on 31 December 1655 in Totnes, co. Devonshire, England.80 He immigrated in 1662 to Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts; Sailed from Dartmouth in the ship Nathaniel, John Adams, Master.57,79 He died after 1711 in Massachusetts.2,79

The six known children of Hannah3 Jewett and Christopher Babbage all born in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, were as follows:

20. Nehemiah3 Jewett (Joseph2, Edward1) was born on 6 April 1643 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.24,17,14 He married Exercise Pierce, daughter of John Pierce, on 17 October 1668 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.47,17 He died on 1 January 1719/20 in Ipswich Village, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 76.17,83 He was buried in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.10

"Elder" Nehemiah, was born in Rowley , Massachusetts, 6 April 1643. He married in Lynn, Massachusetts, 19 October 1668, Exercise Pierce, daughter of John and Rebecca (Wheeler) Pierce, of Lynn. "Nehemiah Jewett, son of Joseph and Mary was married to Exercise Pierce, the 17 of October on the second day of the week in the year 1668." (Old family records) She died in Ipswich, Massachusetts, 13 November 1731.

He lived some time in Lynn before joining the Rowley Church as shown by the records of that church. "2 July 1676 Mr. Nehemiah Jewett had not procured his dismission from Lynn Church wch he had ioyned years since when he lived with his uncle Purchas at the Ironworks."

He was made a freeman at Lynn, 29 April 1668, and in 1667 had land laid out to him in Hog Island Marsh, Rowley. "He settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, on a farm west of his brothers Jeremiah and divided from it by the street. He was well educated and very prominent in the affairs of Essex County: most of the wills and deeds of his townsman from 1675 to the time of his death were drawn by him," (Essex Inst. Hist. Col.). And Exercise Pierce Married 19:8 mo. 1668.

Exercise Pierce was born circa 1650 in Essex County, Massachusetts.2 She died on 13 November 1731 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts.47,17

The 11 known children of Nehemiah3 Jewett and Exercise Pierce all born in Ipswich Village, Essex County, Massachusetts, were as follows:

Joseph3 Jewett (Joseph2, Edward1) was born on 1 April 1656 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.2,25 He married Ruth Wood, daughter of Thomas Wood and Ann [_____], on 16 January 1680/81 in Essex County, Massachusetts.88 He died on 30 October 1694 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 38.2,88

Ruth Wood was born on 21 July 1662 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts.2 She married John Lunt, son of John Lunt, on 26 October 1696.2 She died on 29 November 1734 in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, at age 72.2
