Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Betty Grummer quickly discovered the artistic challenges associated with sketching and painting on location in the city's French Quarter, the area's plantation grounds, parks and bayous. With a life-long interest in art, her work is drawn from personal experiences, nature and the things familiar in her environment. She studied with New Orleans garden district artist Marietta Ellsion, and later studied studio and art history at Tarrant County College and at the University of Texas at Arlington. For several years she was associated with a group of working artists in an art studio and gallery in the historic Fort Worth stockyards. Betty is a member of the Trinity Art Guild in Bedford, Texas.
Speaking of her work she says, "My goal is to capture the spiritual essence of my subject, not a photographic copy of what God has already so wonderfully created. In producing works of art I experience a sense of connection with God. It is my hope that in my art the viewer might also discover for themselves some meaningful spiritual dimension."
In October of 2001 she presented a one-person show at the German-American Cultural Center in the greater New Orleans area. The museum is affiliated with the National Parks System. As a result of this show a reproduction of her painting "Seven Oaks Plantation" has been published in a book, The Lost Plantation: The Rise and Fall of Seven Oaks by author Dr. Marc Matrana.
Betty donated this painting to Celebration of Arts, a silent art auction to benefit The Northside Open Arms Child Developement Center, at the former Modern Art Museum.

Kyrie Eleison Lord Have Mercy oil (12" x 9") |
Outside Betty's studio window she was privileged to view a mother bird going in and out of a hanging fern basket. Apparently she was feeding little ones. Inspired by this sight, Kyrie Eleison evolved on Betty's canvas. The little birds seem to be crying out to be fed, "Kyrie Eleison", or "Lord have mercy", a refrain of an ancient litany. |

Rusty is a proud native Texan. As an orphaned baby kitten he was rescued from a church yard and now lives with the artist's daughter. Rusty struts about with an arrogant attitude and has been known to hiss and raise a paw to swipe at strangers. After observing Rusty's moods and antics over the years the artitst's imagination began to soar. A series developed portraying Rusty celebrating a variety of occasions and sometimes displaying a kinder, more sensitive kitty. |
