About This Site:

This site is in no way definitive, taxonomically correct, etc., etc.. It was launched by someone (who has long since held a University library card)  trying to "get their arms around" plants related to Gongora and Stanhopea. Hopefully there are a number of other budding Stan-Fans* out there either needing info or willing to share it in this format. More importantly, I hope not to offend any of the individuals who have made advances in the study of these wonderful plants with this amateurish resource. Here's a great "relationship" oriented doc that may shed some light on this group:     http://www.amjbot.org/cgi/content/full/87/12/1842

If you've stumbled on this site, chances are you know your way around the Internet and to the popular on-line Stan sources (The Stanhopea Page - Stanhopea specific info / JEM Orchids - Well known grower / Klehm Growers - Agent for reputable Colombian grower / Oak Hill Gardens - Good prices. email for full list / Spring Orchid Specialties - George gets in some real winners. Gotta be fast / Bergstrom Orchids - Email for full listing / Dowery - Phone for full listing / Orchideen - Germany / Brookside - Canadian agent for AU grower / Akerne Orchids - Belgian source / The OSP - Orchid seeds). If not, check'em out now. Need some general culture info:1/2/3/4/5? If you're looking for a decent general "picture book", get The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids or for a Stanhopea specific book get The Astonishing Stanhopeas. Here's some literature to track down. Wanna dig through the OLD archives for some nuggets? What's cooking in the lab?

Yup, things are looking pretty sparse around here at present. With any luck that soon will change.  Feel free to email me with any comments, suggestions, photo's, culture spec's, requests, ideas, flasks/compots/seedlings/plants wanted or for-sale, trade/barters, etc.. Credits will be noted and all submitted material will remain the property of said submitter. If anyone would like to take over this site, let me know. I just wanted to try and get the on-line ball rolling. If anyone wants to "sign" or view the guestbook, click here.

* A budding Stan-Fan might wonder; Why is Gong. galeata now Acropera?, Why is Lacaena so expensive?, Was Soterosanthus prev. Sievekingia?, How is Sievekingia pronounced?, Who might be interested in a division of my Stan. Penelope?, Why do I have trouble with my Trevoria? What the heck is a Trevoria?, Can I train my Embreea to bloom for an out-of-season show?, Is the alliance Gongoriae "official"?, What does Peristeria pendula look like? What are these sunken brown spots on my Acineta? Am I the only one who thinks some Stan's "smell BAD!"?

I'm starting to feel like I'm herding cats here. Although these guys are related, some appear to like radical culture and some do not, some are finicky with others quite the opposite, funky ailments on one do not show up on others. Not complaining...just observation-ing.
