Entered to the screen, it will insert your nickname for the /me command, leaving off your nickname as a prefix.

....Chat and Message Windows

TWO WAYS TO CHAT PRIVATELY with someone in the same channel:

1)DCC-Chat: Highlight their nick in the nicklist. Right Click and chose DCC then CHAT. and window will open that they may either accept or ignore.

2) Query: Double click on a NICK. A private window will open that will send a message to him/her. If someone Messages you, your window will have /msg in the typing line. To answer, use Tab key once to put the sender name on the typing line, then type message OR double click on their nick to get a window without the /msg in it.

THREE WAYS TO SEND MESSAGE to someone NOT in the same Channel:

1) Type /msg nickname then the message. A message window will open like the Query window.

2) Click on DCC menu at the top of mirc screen and choose CHAT.

3) Click on COMMANDS on the Menu Bar and choose Query User.

....Install A Doorbell on a Channel

A handy thing to have is a Doorbell on the Channel so that you can actually 'hear' someone join the channel. To install a doorbell, you need a suitable wav file to use as a doorbell. I have a doorbl.wav if you would like to come to the channel to download it but you can use any appropriate wav in place of doorbl.wav. Copy the following command into your Remote Menu:

on 1:join:#genealogyforum:/splay doorbl.wav

Be sure to check LISTEN and select events.

What Is a Ping?

Ping: A ping measures the length of time it takes for a signal to leave my computer go to yours and then return to mine... That is referred to as "lag time." If there seems to be an inordinate amount of time between responses from someone, they may be lagging. Pinging each other can often help reduce and prevent long lags.

TO PING SOMEONE: Highlight their Nickname, then RIGHT click, Choose CTCP then choose PING. The reply will appear on the STATUS Screen.

To "FLOAT" the Channel Screen

This will 'free' the channel screen from the bigger mIRC screen. However, if you float it, you won't be able to SEE if someone sends a DCC chat window, so you will want to attach a wav to the 'Chat request' option. (See sound setup)

Click the small silver/gray box in the upper LEFT corner of the channel screen and choose "Desktop" Click OK. Then MINIMIZE the larger mIRC screen behind it.. The mIRC screen will go to the taskbar, leaving the channel screen alone on the monitor screen.

(NOTICE that you can also turn your "Logging" on and off here.)

....CARDFILE

(Handy to Add)

If you are running Windows 3.1, OR if you Upgraded to Windows95 FROM 3.1 you have a cardfile.exe program. If you have Win95, but never had 3.1 you will need to get someone to DCC you the cardfile.exe file from their program.

CARDFILE SETUP: Put cardfile.exe file from win3.1 in your mIRC directory. Copy and paste the following to your mIRC popups/channel menu:

Edit Cards:/run cardfile.exe IRCnotes.crd ...........Click OK

To open the Cardfile:

RIGHT CLICK mouse in center of mIRC Channel screen. Choose EDIT CARDS. The first time, it MAY ask if you want to create ircnotes.crd file; if it asks, answer YES. The cardfile will open and you can minimize it to the task bar to use during your mIRC session.

TO ADD A CARD:

Choose ADD, enter a heading for the card. (I also enter the same heading on the first line of the body of the card so I can "SEARCH" for card rather than "GO TO".) This is a great place to copy and paste information from the channel screen. It is fully searchable, making it very easy to find information. If you don't remember ALL of the conversation, you can search for keywords from it to do a search.

We will be adding to these instructions as time goes by, so check back often.
