Your first job is to find out why the Chinese immigrants came to California in the first place. You will need to find out what was happening both in China and in California in the late 1840's. The following links will give you the information you need.

The Discovery of Gold in California by John A. Sutter, 1848 : This is John Sutter's actual account of how gold was dicovered on his saw mill. This account was first published in Hutching's California Magazine in November of 1857, and it can be found at the Museum of the City of San Francisco website.

San Francisco, Angel Island, Chinese Immigration History : This is a site from the San Diego On-Line magazine. Hint: the first paragraph underneath the picture of boats will be the most helpful for you.
