All yo-yos can be broken down into two types of yo-yo, transaxle or one-piece. In addition, there are several styles of yo-yos.
Transaxle yo-yos generally share many of the following features;
Transaxle yo-yos are capable of very long sleep times. They also acheive high rotational speeds for excellent stability. There are many fine examples of transaxle yo-yos available.
Premium Hardwood Yo-yos prefers the one-piece yo-yo for its more traditional feel and play action.
One-piece yo-yos generally share the following features;

| The imperial yo-yo is the classic design of one-piece yo-yos. This popular style has been around since the beginning of yo-yo history. Imperials have most of their weight near the center of the disks, which allows the yo-yo to be a good performer for looping tricks. | The butterfly style of yo-yo makes string-mounted tricks easier. This style of yo-yo does not perform looping tricks very well. | Slimline yo-yos are good all around yo-yos. They perform tricks well and are easy to carry in your pocket. | The modified yo-yo style allows for the most decorative and beautiful yo-yos. Modifieds often have heavy rim weights to allow excellent sleeping capabilities. | Oversize yo-yos are generally about 3 inches in diameter or larger. A huge yo-yo would be 3.5 inches in diameter. |
