REAR ADMIRAL KARL L. KAUP August 11, 1941-December 30, 1998 Karl Lee Kaup, son of Alfred D. Kaup and the late Thelma Asher Kaup of Marionville, Missouri passed away at age 57 due to a malignant brain tumor. Admiral Kaup was a 1959 graduate of Marionville High School and of the United States Naval Academy class of 1963. He spent more than 34 years serving his country as a pioneer in the Navy Nuclear Submarine program and as a principal warrior in the cold war with the former Soviet Union; a war in which he took great pride in the United States ultimate victory. After graduating from the Naval Academy and completing nuclear power and submarine training, Rear Admiral Kaup served aboard USS BLENNY (SS 324), USS SNOOK (SSN 592), USS NATHAN HALE (SSBN 623) and USS HAWKBILL (SSN 666). Between submarine assignments he was a Squadron Engineer for Submarine Squadron Five and Submarine Group Five, both located in San Diego, CA. From 1976 to 1978, Rear Admiral Kaup worked for the Director, Division of Naval Reactors, Admiral H. G. Rickover, as Assistant of Nuclear Trained Enlisted Personnel Matters. From 1978 to 1982 he commanded the attack submarine USS TUNNY (SSN 682) at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During his tour Tunny made two deployments to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans. The submarine was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation and Battle Efficiency "E" under his command. His next assignment was Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Submarine Warfare. He commanded Submarine Squadron Eighteen at Charleston, South Carolina, from 1984 to 1986 prior to serving as Chief of Staff Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After selection to flag rank in 1987, Rear Admiral Kaup became the Director, Strategic Submarine Division on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. Subsequently he commanded Submarine Group Five in San Diego, California from 1990 to 1991 and then served as Commander, Naval Base, Charleston, South Carolina. Rear Admiral Kaup's military awards include seven Legions of Merit and various other personal, unit, and campaign awards. Following his retirement from the Navy in October 1993, Mr. Kaup accepted a position with Commonwealth Edison Company of Chicago, Illinois as the Vice President in charge of the Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station. Braidwood, comprised of two 1175 megawatt Westinghouse nuclear reactors, provided about 20 percent of the power for the Northern Illinois area. Mr. Kaup left Commonwealth Edison in 1996 and formed Argosy Associates, an independent consulting company in San Diego, California. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, the former Donna Brandal of Seattle, Washington, his daughters Stacy Kaup of Falls Church, VA, Jennifer Hannon of Coronado, CA, and Amy Vigeant of San Diego, CA, brothers, Dr. David Kaup of Potsdam, NY and Mr. Michael Kaup of Crane Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial Service was held on Friday, January 8, 1999 at College Ave Baptist Church, 4747 College Ave, San Diego at 10am with gravesite service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at 1pm with full military honors. |
